Winter Wednesday - The First Signs of Spring?

It has been a wintery last few days here in the Binghamton, New York area.  Yesterday, snow showers.  Sunday, bitter winds. Yet, spring is on its way.  How do we know?

Nature tells us.  On February 16 we saw the signs.

A dandelion blooming in a lawn on the West Side of Binghamton.

A little further along, we saw signs of spring bulbs starting to emerge from the ground, as the snow melted off.

Even before then, we heard birds singing.  This is not abnormal for the middle of February, but the birds were out in force.  Now they are singing daily, as I prepare to travel to work in the early morning.

No robins yet, but it is a matter of time.

Can spring be far behind?

  1. It's the same thing here in England. Bulbs are emerging, leaves are forming on roses and hydrangeas. I always thing the plants know about the approaching weather. I might be wrong. Light levels could produce the growth.

  2. How can we not want that first sign of spring?! And yes I find robins a great sign too! We are having some of our coldest weather (around the freezing mark) this winter right now....

  3. Maybe the conventional calendar is merging with the Hebrew one- the new year for trees was a month ago!
