Nature's Creamsicle

A creamsicle -  combine orange and vanilla. Orange sherbert and vanilla ice cream was one of my favorite combinations as a child, and it still is.

In nature, we have a lot of color schemes.  Selective breeding has given us some additional ones.

So, let's see what type of creamsicle Nature has prepared for us over the past couple of weeks here in upstate New York.

For the white, nature and man has both provided.

Unknown flowering shrub, Otsiningo Park, Binghamton, New York. (I'd love to know what this is.  The leaves looked lilac like.)

Wild blackberry, Vestal Rail Trail, Vestal, New York.
A beautiful azalea or rhododendron shrub, smothered in white flowers (Westover, near Johnson City, New York).

For the orange, we have this poppy, towards the end of its bloom.
And finally, what is probably a Mollis azalea (west side of Binghamton, NY).  The sun angle was wrong, I tried to get rid of the glare with my Photoshop Express on my iPhone. The orange doesn't display well in this retouched photo but it was definitely orange.

What's blooming where you live?

  1. Beautiful photos. Where I live, the conker trees are still in full flower, wild garlic flowers and bluebells are fading, as are tulips. Round balls of purple allium are standing straight on their stalks like lollypops, and a terra-cotta colored azalia is covered in flowers and buds despite the leaves showing yellow strips. I think it needs attention. Nature is wonderful.

    1. I think we call conker trees "Horse chestnuts" here in the States. I looked it up and I see where a disease imported from Asia may be endangering your horse chest...er, conkers. What a shame! But yes, nature is wonderful. We forget, too many times, that all of us are a part of nature, and are supposed to be the guardians of the Earth - instead of neglecting it, or worse.

  2. Alana,
At our house the mock orange and the rose bushes are budding and promising to burst into bloom any day now. Also irises are blooming and wafting lovely fragrances into the air . . . my honeysuckle is blooming, too, and the bees are very happy about that . . . I love all your photos! And I love creamsicles, too.

  4. Lovely photos!

And now that you mentioned it, I think a creamsickle sounds delicious. I'll have to make one.

  5. Thank you. The roses here (we have a wild one, but that's it- too many problems with Japanese beetles and we wanted to stay oganic) started blooming about 5 days ago. Mock orange is blooming - I love the fragrance. Honeysuckle, I think, is about done.
