Watermelon Oreos?

Would you eat a watermelon flavored Oreo?

I haven't tried one yet but this inspires me to blog about my favorite cookie:  the Oreo Cookie.
I am still pining away for the limited edition Strawberry Milkshake Oreo.

The Strawberry Milkshake Oreo.  The best Oreo ever-strawberry creme, chocolate cookie.  (Nabisco, when will you ever bring it back?  And, is it true that it is still sold in Canada even today?)

Yesterday, someone at work told me about a limited edition lemon Oreo (with blonde cookies).  She let me taste a couple today and they are good.  They would be better with the chocolate cookies, but that's not what Nabisco is marketing. (Note: as always, I do not get compensated from anyone for any product review - not that I do them very often). Not cloyingly sweet, like the birthday cake Oreo (ugh) or the candy corn Oreo (double ugh, but I detest genuine candy corn so what was I doing tasting one of these?) or the "this has to be a joke, right?" chocolate creme Oreo.

So I went online to research the lemon oreos and read instead about the limited edition Watermelon Oreos just introduced here in the United States.

Could Oreo be outdoing themselves with new flavors?  I've read several online reviews about the watermelon Oreos (again, with blonde cookie) - and people actually like them.  They are not artificially over-watermelonated (is that a word?).  Why they are both red and green is beyond me - and who needs artificial color like this - but I am intrigued.

Of course, two of these watermelon Oreos are 150 calories and a lot of Weight Watchers points.  Too many, considering that REAL watermelon is zero points and lots of nutrition.

But I am intrigued.  If I can get to a Target soon (it's a Target exclusive) I may be tempted to buy a package. (but don't tell my former Weight Watchers leader.)

There are a lot of Oreo flavors that aren't sold in the United States.  Why not?  Perhaps we aren't ready for Green Tea Oreos (which do appeal to me) but why not the tri-chocolate Oreos they sell in Mexico? Each cookie a different chocolate and the creme a third kind of chocolate?  Or mango/orange Oreos?  Or raspberry Oreos?

Come on, Nabisco.  Bring back the Strawberry Milkshake Oreo and bring on the Mexican chocolate Oreo!  You are missing a marketing opportunity!

Have you had any of the "unusual" (to the United States, that is) Oreos?  What did you think of them?

  1. Alana,
I've got to be honest here, whya are they messing around so much with the Oreo? Don't they already sell a jillion of them every day? Okay, I agree with the strawberry oreo--I tasted one and I thought it was great. And I like the mint oreo very much. It makes sense to pair chocolate with mint and strawberry--but watermelon? lemon? Oh, I see that they are blonde--still, I don't know. Seems a bit of a stretch. Still, I'd try one if I had one . . . or two . . .

    1. I think it's a tool to keep interest up and boost sales. As long as they don't try kimchi or sriracha Oreos, I'm willing to try the fruit flavored ones.

  2. It is amazing to me the special variations that companies come out with. I guess it boosts sales if it is also "for a limited time only". I would be up for trying a watermelon oreo but not sure I'd want (certainly don't NEED) a whole package!

    1. I don't need a whole package of watermelon, either. What a good idea you have - a variety pack! Mix several flavors in together. Hey, Nabisco!!

  3. I LOVE Oreos.
(I could tell some many stories about how often Oreos played a part in my life but that is for another day.)

My husband was just telling me about this yesterday, as a matter of fact.

I love oreos and I love watermelon but didn't think it would go, but then he told me it is not chocolate so it sounds like it might be pretty good.

    :-)

    1. At 2 Weight Watchers points each, I'm not about to buy an entire package of watermelon Oreos to try one or two. I'm happy my co worker let me have a couple of her lemon Oreos. I look forward to reading one of your Oreo stories.

    1. I'll be curious to find out how many people agree with you.

  5. I dunno. I saw them advertised the other night and my first reaction was, Sacrilege! Followed closely by my second reaction, Blech. Don't mess with the chocolate, unless you're just adding more chocolate. I'd sign a petition to bring the triple chocolate variety up from our southern neighbors, though. :)

    1. Certain fruit flavors blend well with chocolate, such as (in my opinion) orange, lime, strawberry and raspberry. But chocolate and watermelon? Nope. Maybe I should start circulating the triple chocolate petition.

  6. I've never eaten one. Even if they're available in the UK, I wouldn't eat a sweet biscuit. I stopped eating sugar about a year ago and now I don't have a craving for it. I once read that sugar is something we should avoid. However, (disclaimer) I eat a teaspoon of honey on my cereal. Hehe.

    1. Apparently a lot of people in the UK share your opinion (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7376123.stm). One thing I totally agree with this article on is that American Cadbury bars are junk compared to the British originals. Hershey (here in the States) ruined them! One of our local supermarkets has a small selection of British food and I am going to check out the "digestive biscuits". Also, I agree with many that sugar is addictive. One day I will work on that addiction. But not just yet.

  7. The lemon Oreos are a big hit in our house, but, like you, I wish they came with a chocolate cookie. (Gertrude Hawk has a dark chocolate coated lemon Smidgen, BTW--YUM!)

We all like the reverse Oreos, with chocolate cream and vanilla cookies. They called them "Uh-Oh Oreos" when they first came out. My daughter, the sugar addict, likes the current "Sure-Bert" (sherbet) Oreos, but I find them too sweet.

I think I would not like watermelon, but raspberry or orange sound good!

    1. I got to try the watermelon Oreos today at work. (I even made a video but I have to find a way to edit it.) They were pretty good. Not as good as a dark chocolate coated lemon Smidgen would be. That sounds fantastic but I'm not buying more sweets for the home until I am down to my target weight on Weight Watchers. On the other hand, what happens at work stays at work....
