The January Thaw

It's over now but we've had an unbelievable stretch of warmish weather here in upstate New York.  What an up and down January it's been!

At my mother in law's house in southern New York State, it got up to 54 degrees on Sunday.  I had to spend almost the entire day indoors caring for my mother in law, but I took a few minutes out to stroll around her neighborhood.
What a wonderful tangle of tree trunks.
These bushes had a yellowish tint to them.
And by an empty flowerpot, a garden statue held the promise that one day, flowers would bloom again.

I can hardly wait.  This morning, there is a dusting of snow on the ground and the high is supposed to be 32 F (0 C).

What is the weather like where you live?

  1. It does look lovely, and snow-less for the middle of January. Is it normal to have such a dearth of snow? Or did you carefully avoid showing us pictures of piles of it?

    1. Until about 4 or 5 years ago, we might have a "January thaw", but only for a couple of days. There are still piles of snows in parking lots, and there is more snow in the mountains than in the valley where I (and most residents of this area) live. But I can also remember Januaries with 2 or more feet of snow on the ground.

  2. I'm in CA where we are having an exceptionally warm winter. I've been in NY once in December (my husband is native) and that was quite a shock to this CA girl's system!

    1. It is definitely a shock. I lived in Florida for two years. One November I had to make a trip to New York. I know just what you mean by the shock to the system!

  3. Hi Alana! It's gone up and down a bit here, too. But today, it was COLD! Of course, for me, that means below 50 degrees. When it gets below 40, I try to stay inside whenever possible (I know, cold weather wimp).

    1. No, not weather wimp. I used to live in Florida so I know well how people in climes like that become intolerant of cold

    1. I hope your thaw lasts as long as ours. We will be back to winter soon, sadly, according to the weatherman.

  5. It's pleasant her in southern England too. Something has really gone wrong with the weather. Apart from a fine sprinkling of snow in December, winter hasn't shown it's might. This mild winter reminds me of living in South Australia. I love the shot of the tree trunks. Just as beautiful as a fully-leaved tree.

    1. I agree something has gone wrong with the weather - all throughout the U.S. and all throughout the world. love the look of bare trees. You see character in the trees. And bird nests. And, bare trees make lovely pictures.

    1. We won't be there (we are in southern New York right now) but I heard the forecast for next week. One day a high of 12 above. Ugh!
