These Are Our Colors

Here are the colors of spring in upstate New York.  I bring these to you lying down, as I've re-injured my back. So I am going to take it easy for the next several days. I skipped my exercise/photography walk tonight. These photos were taken in the past two or three days, except the redbud.
A dogwood, taken close up, in shades of pink and white with yellow centers.
Rhododendrons bloom at the same time as dogwoods.  Here, they show off in red and pink on the West Side of Binghamton.

Here, purple as in a weeping redbud (a couple of weeks ago) in majestic purple.
Creeping phlox in purple, white and lavender.
Little lantern columbine in red.
A purple rhododendron.

And, an orange begonia I bought for a hanging basket.

What are the colors of the season you are in?

  1. OH, Alana, I'm so sorry that you are laid up! I hope that your back heals very quickly! Your flower pictures are just breathtaking. We don't have rhododendrons here (I suppose you have azalias too?) and I wish that we did. The colors here are more muted--with the predominant color (after some rain that we received, finally) being a welcome GREEN. But tulips are blooming, and the irises are just starting, so we've got that, and lots of annuals are being planted, of course. Enjoy your day, Alana, and HEAL!

    1. Thank you - I'm much better after a therapeutic massage. We have both azaleas and rhododendrons. I actually think what I took pictures of are azaleas. But anymore, it seems like the boundaries between azaleas and rhodies are increasingly becoming blurred. And, I missed both of them when I lived in Kansas - although we had other plants to make spring beautiful.

  2. Sorry to hear you re-injured your back! I love the picture with the weeping redbud in majestic purple. I'm a fan of purple so that's probably why it's my favorite one! I live in Astoria, Queens and there is this one house that uses an entire empty lot of another house to grow flowers in the summer. Right now it's still bare but soon it'll be blooming and beautiful :)

    1. I would love to see pictures of that back yard. Imagine, having that much room to grow something in the city. I grew up in an apartment building in the Bronx, and dreamed constantly of having my own garden.

  3. Lovely pictures! Our colours here are pretty much the same and I'd sum them up as bright and vibrant! We've had a spell of warm weather here, and combined with the colours, doesn't it just make you want to breath in as much as you can? Shame we can't bottle it!

    1. Oh yes, it's a shame we can't bottle it. Or have smell-o-blog to smell the lilacs - which are in bloom here now.

  4. I hope you feel better soon - no fun! I've been off with a badly broken wrist for about 4 months now. Really looking forward to lilacs in the next 2 weeks or so!!

  5. Hope you get better soon!

What gorgeous photos and flowers - and wow, such color and growth already! I say that because here in Maine, winter lasted so long, it seemed to slow the normal spring growth. We're just now getting leaves on the trees and certainly not lush floral growth. Thanks for sharing!!

  7. I've heard with a back injury you should continue with your normal activities. I used to do that when I worked. I must admit, the pain eased quickly. Ten years on, I discovered I had osteoporosis. Little sections of my spine were collapsing. Anyway, it's fine now, so the method must have worked. How wonderful to have flowers to cheer your soul even if you're in pain. Love the dogwood.

  8. Dogwood is my hands down favorite this time of year. I can't believe I've never had one. I feel really out of my element when it comes to planting and caring for trees. You're ahead of us in the rhododendron department. I anticipate mine won't bloom until June this year, especially with the cooler weather forecast for the rest of this week.

Do hope your back feels better soon so you can be out and about!
