Overdue Compliments

Today, it's time to pay a long overdue compliment.

Did you know that March 1 was World Compliment Day?

Well, I didn't either.  Seems, lately, I'm doing a lot of catching up with things after the fact.

I've done my share of grumbling about the weather during this long, hard winter, and it is time to sneak in one more cold related post.  This time, though, it is going to be positive.
After I took this, it dropped to -4F.
So many people do fine jobs related to the weather, and don't receive compliments:

The National Weather Service.  Schools, governments, non profits, transportation agencies and so many more depend on their efforts.

The United States Postal Service, which gets the mail delivered (slower, but it gets there).

Fire departments - can you imagine fighting fires in sub zero weather, with hydrants blocked by piles of snow?

I can't.

Which is why I want to pay a compliment to all of these people.  You do a great job!

Is there anyone you want to compliment?  Feel free to put your compliment in the comments below.

(And thank you for visiting.  A compliment to all of my readers, too. You obviously know quality when you read it.... )

  3. I'd like to compliment my kids... it isn't easy being the child of a night shift nurse. Mom is tired a lot and three nights a week she isn't there to tuck you in....

And my husband, who makes up for mom's absences with grace and love.

    1. Such lovely compliments, Elisabeth. Thank you. I hope that, somehow, your family finds out about what you posted.

  4. Alana, I apologize in advance for being a scold, but I think you may mean "compliment: an expression of praise or admiration." That being said, I compliment you on acknowledging the work and the contributions of people whose efforts often go unnoticed or are only noticed when there is a problem with them.

    1. You aren't a scold. Just observant. I've blogged before about my struggles with grammar and spelling before. That is one reason why English was never my favorite (or best) subject in school. I did some Internet checking just now and found the compliment/complement confusion is common. Your comment also prompted me to edit my blog post (I normally write at night and edit in the morning but I didn't have time today) and I found a missing period and a missing "is". So, my compliments to you for giving me a heads up!

  6. You're right. We should remember to appreciate and thank all the people who keep the country running, no matter where we live. I'd like to thank the health care professionals who are there to help everyone who needs care. We're so lucky to live in a caring society. So many people around the world can't count on back up.

  7. Nice of you to think of them. We often take them for granted. Let me compliment you for reminding us that we should at least now and then acknowledge the good work that they do.

  8. Alana,
I'd like to compliment the mail man, the road crews, the grocery store owner, and all the others who keep at it, even when the weather is bad. Or very bad. And compliments to you, dear friend, for reminding us about gratitude! Sometimes it's easier to pick away at faults, but being grateful is much nicer.

  9. Compliments and encouragement are so important! It's always better to build people up, then tear them down (the whole "treat others as you want to be treated" philosophy).

And yes, I would like to compliment you for always sharing such interesting posts! I'm never disappointed when I visit your blog! :-)

  10. Ah how easily we take for granted the services of others! It's days like these that get us back to focusing on stuff we really should be doing all year through!
I admire how you blog so consistently, Alana!
