The Fall of the Spider?

My upstate New York backyard has been under a mass invasion all summer.

I don't mind spiders, but after having dealt with what I think was a spider bite on my knee earlier this month (all is well), I am not happy to see this mass takeover of my property.

In the almost 30 years we've lived in this house, we've never seen anything like this.  Last night, in the glow of what photographers call the "golden hour", webs shone in the sunset.   Please enjoy:

Spider and a web on the back porch. The spider was not white; the sunlight was glowing off of him/her.  I don't know about spiders and this website led me to believe the spider I saw is a "grass spider". I am sure one of my readers will figure it out.

If it is a grass spider, they are considered beneficial - a good thing.

Another view.

The spider (before it ran off) showing why I will never be a wildlife photographer.

Another web was nearby.

My clothesline has been taken over by spider webs, which you can not see in this photo.

I know I won't be complaining about it in a month, but right now, this is one part of early fall I do not enjoy.

But I am grateful for being to observe nature right in my backyard.

  1. For the very first time in the 44 years I have lived in my home, I had someone come out and spray for bugs outside my foundation. I too suffered spider bites this year and it is not pleasant. I wish you luck with your home invaders.

    1. The frost will get them (advantage of living in upstate New York - until the snow comes, anyway.) Thank you.

  2. In my old house (the one I lived in for 26 y, until I downsized), this was the time if year for spider intrudions, jumping critter invasions, among other insects. I would drop a bomb on each of the floors, leave for work, to return home (or the kids) after 6 hours to a bug-free abode.
My new residence has fewer intrusiond, but the bombs will go off today.

    1. Bombs away! I don't like to kill, but when they bite me, the line has been crossed.

  4. Congratulations on your tolerant view toward spiders. They are so often persecuted by unthinking people who do not realize their value to a healthy ecosystem. Nature is sometimes inconvenient but always worth honoring.

    1. I do not like to kill. Spiders, as you point out, have an important part in their ecosystem. I don't think the grass spider is what bit me. But I came close to having to visit the doctor. Fortunately, the pharmacist was able to give me advice that worked.

    1. That's how I feel. And now, I have so many spiderwebs inside my house - I would be tempted to let them sit, and call them Halloween decorations.

  6. We have had a extra ordinary amount of spiders living on my front porch, so it makes sitting out there a little difficult. I do not like them, but they do eat other unsightly bugs. So I am putting up with them.

    1. I know how beneficial they are to the ecosystem. But running into webs literally all over my back yard...ugh.

  7. I put the pressure on my garden hose and go to town. I hate to admit it but I sorta love disrupting their lives...I am sorry spiders!

  8. I love your pictures but I cannot stand spiders. I smiled at the beauty of the webs in these pics, but I was also cringing!

  9. This is the time of year for spiders here, too. When I got home from work, I pulled into the garage, and there was a spider crawling on my car. ???

  11. Beautiful images, Alana. I have a reaction to spider licks, so I keep as far away from them as I can.
