Music Monday - A New Beginning

Today, January 2, is my first Music Monday of the year.

2016 was not a good year for the world of music.  It is time for a new beginning, as I feature some songs about beginnings.

Beginnings - Chicago

From the Beginning - Emerson, Lake and Palmer (a group who lost two members in 2016 - Greg Lake and Keith Emerson.)

(Just Like) Starting Over - John Lennon

Finally, from one of my favorite singers, the late Karen Carpenter - We've Only Just Begun by The Carpenters.

Why don't we all sing these songs today, so 2017 will be inspired to be a better year for the world in general?

When I listen to these songs, I realize how many great musicians die relatively young.  Even when I was considering these particular songs, I remembered tha  Karen Carpenter was only 32 when she died from complications of anorexia.  John Lennon was only 40 when he was killed.  Greg Lake was only five years older than I am.

Our time here is limited.  I am determined, this year, to make some kind of difference.

  1. First, I love a good theme. And this playlist is going to stay open on my desktop today! :-) Second, recognizing that our time is limited...like for real, not just 'knowing' it, but really knowing it enough to change our actions... is one of the most valuable reminders I've gotten at the start of this new year. Thanks!

    1. How limited our time is becoming a theme in my life. My husband has an aunt who is turning 105 later this month and we don't know how much longer she will be with us.

  2. I love your take on Music Monday. I remembered some of those songs, a couple I had never heard of, so thanks for introducing me to them. Yes, our time is limited, making a difference will help make the world better for those who follow. The difference can be big or small, but it will affect so many more than we know. Glad you joined UBC.

  3. Great collection of songs! I can listen to ELP all day (as I could with Chicago and John Lennon). I need to be in the right mood (mellow) to listen to Karen though! LOL

Thanks for sharing some 'New Year' songs. May 2017 be a great year for you!

  7. What a great collection of songs and a terrific idea for the theme for beginning a New Year. I was just thinking of the Carpenters last month as I have a friend whose health has been compromised by anorexia...so sad. Yes, our time is limited...so let's make the most of 2017. I agree with Denise...you make a difference with your blogging. Wishing you and yours a Healthy and Happy New Year.

    1. One of my cousins suffered from anorexia. She was finally successfully treated, but it was touch and go for several years. I will strive to make a difference, even if small, in my readers' lives.

  8. Oh yes, we lost so many good ones in 2016. Great theme - new beginnings ... that what life is really - and we can still carry with us the good from the past... Wish you a happy new year and a great new beginning. I so enjoyed these songs:-)

  9. Interesting choice of music. That Lennon piece is fairly obscure, but the others were perfect for the augment of a new year

  10. We lost so many legends this year that will certainly be remembered. The old groups and songs that we grew up with were the best, but I like the theme of new beginnings!

  11. I too believe in the power of music and the first thing I do when I wake up is switch on the radio- I have grown up to hear my dad do this every day; now its my habit! I simply cannot live without music in the background...

  14. Yes, we lost so many amazing people in 2016 - and it has already started for 2017! Great collection of music and amazing that some songs are so enduring, even long after the musicians who sang and/or played them have passed on.
