Hair - Music Monday #atozchallenge

Today, traveling through time and space, I return to the 1960's, a time of great social upheaval - just like today.

A blogger in suburban New York City reminded me of a song that seems just perfect for today.

This is a cover of a song that was written for the Broadway show "Hair" sung by the group Three Dog Night.

This is taken from the 1979 movie based on the Broadway show.

The Broadway Show, and later movie, explored the final night of a young man from Oklahoma, a farmhand who was on his way to enlist in the Vietnam War.  He meets up with a tribe of hippies in New York City and it's love at first sight between him and a female tribe member.  There's just one problem: he's on his way to combat. So....

We live in a time when every day brings news from our government here in the United States. Some cheer.  Others become more and more fearful.

When Hair was written, in the 1960's, we were in another era where it seemed things were getting worse daily.

At work recently, a co worker came to visit another co worker.  I was just leaving for lunch, but was in the area long enough to hear co worker #1 upset because someone had just unfriended her on Facebook over a news item she had posted.  The former friend had taken it "the wrong way".

We can be so cruel to each other on social media.  Even a harmless pregnant giraffe living in upstate New York brought out the snark in some because she wasn't giving birth when expected.  Seriously?

We are all on edge.   We are increasingly polarized.

Yes, too much like my memories of the late 1960's.

Today is "H" Day on the Blogging from A to Z Challenge.

  1. Wow. Now this brings back memories. I went to see the musical on my honeymoon in 1971. The songs never grow old, but I remember how shocked I was when suddenly they were all naked on stage. You can find me here LINK

  2. I was born too late to appreciate 60s music at the time, but I do now - my favourite decade. Great post. I'll be back to see what else you post, quite an original theme I'd say!. Good luck x

  3. In January 1970 two friends and I drove to Toronto to see the musical. Ah, memories.

  4. Thanks for the mention.

We saw Hair when it was revived on Broadway a few years ago.

  5. Every decade has its drama doesn't it Alana? Funny that the current decade's drama involves a pregnant giraffe (although it does seem to be the longest giraffe pregnancy in recorded history!)

  7. Like I cared one iota when a giraffe would be giving birth?
OK, seriously, 3 Dog Night was a most unusual "band" of the 60s and 70s. In that, they didn't write their material, but "covered" the wonderful compositions from Hair, Harry Nilsson, Laura Nyro, among many others. Oh- and they were just singers- they hired a band to play for them....

  8. The Age of Aquarius, deja Vu, no? I never even realized there was a movie or that 3 Dog Night did this song! the play "Hair' was banned in Boston, where I grew up. When I did see the Broadway play I too was shocked with the nakedness.

  9. So funny to realize that I'd heard of Hair, heard the songs from Hair, but never actually knew what it was about.

  10. I've been thinking the same thing lately...that this time we are living in reminds me of the 60's...although I was a lot younger and it was a little easier to take.

  11. Wow, I remember the late 1960s, although I was in elementary school at the time. It was a sad and rather toxic time. Yes, it seems as if we are doing a rerun of toxic times, sigh.

  12. Wonderful. Too many people "take it the wrong way". We should be a bit more laid back, I think.... And ohhhhhh ...what a wonderful musical that was ..hair... great post..

  13. Yup on the polarization. I'm not helping things either. I have heard of Hair, but I was too young for it and haven't sought it out since.
