Music Moves Me - School Tunes

School days.  What memories to they bring to you?

As adults, some of us look upon those days fondly.  For others of us, the memories are not fond.  Either way, songs about school are the prompt today on Music Moves Me.

The very first song that popped into my head was not a modern song, but, rather, a song from 1907, written by Gus Edwards and Will Cobb.  This song is 100 years old, and brings back the feeling of a simpler, perhaps more innocent, time (note the reference to the "hickory stick", however.)
From 1973, My Old School by Steely Dan is not a song about elementary school, but, rather, the college where they met - Bard College, and some less than nostalgic days spent there.

Let's go back to 1963 when I was still in elementary school.  Be True to Your School by the Beach Boys has some wonderful harmonies. Some of us love that school spirit.

Does anyone here remember the 2003 movie "School of Rock"?  I had never heard of it, until one of my spouse's cousins (an elementary school teacher!) gave it to us as a gift.  I loved that movie, and I highly recommend it.  This clip is from the 10th reunion in 2013.

Last but not least...I can't resist this one, because there is a link between this musician and the Binghamton, New York area, where I live.
School's Out - Alice Cooper.  A musician whose tour was once banned from Binghamton.
Yup.

What are your school memories?

  1. Alana,

I heard the expression "hickory tee (stick)" all my life and I'm no stranger to getting whipped with a switch. I'd say most in the 50+ bracket have experienced a run in with a switch in his/her young lives. ;)

I streamed "School of Rock" while on my elliptical several months ago which I enjoyed. Jack Black actually has decent vocals. It was a fun movie!

Alice Cooper's "School's Out" always comes to mind first. I remember how we chanted this song on the last day of school. Hearing it always brings back fond memories and makes me thankful I'm no longer in school. lol

Thanks for sharing the dance floor with the 4M gals today, my friend. Have skooltastic week!

  2. Great choices as always. Lived the article from 1974, but I'm curious why they were banned

  3. I could hear the pipe organ playing (in my mind) for School Days- not the hickory stick. And, that Beach Boys tune- it reminded me of how schools got screwed up by promoting football, instead of educational fundamentals...
But, the Alice Cooper tune is the one that first came to my mind.

  4. A very original set here. I never would have thought of "School Days" (except the Chuck Berry version).

  5. Your selection cracks me up! Alice and the Beach Boys singing their school tributes. I guess I identify with Alice more! That Hickory stick verse just does not fly today that's for sure.

  6. Great songs today. I also used Steely Dan, but you've added a few that I hadn't thought of.

  7. Oh, my goodness! The memories! Every one of these songs kicks them up! I remember my dad singing his version of that first song. School days, school days, dear old poker and pool days. Ahem . . .

  8. Hi Alana,
Great song picks. I used a song called School Days but it wasn't this classic (it was one by the Kinks). There are several songs named School Days and all of them different. I had read about the original one from 1907 but never heard it so I'm glad you included it here.

I sure did see the School of Rock movie. That was a fun flick. Jack Black shined in it.

I haven't heard the Beach Boys "Be True to Your School" in ages. Any Beach Boys song really makes for a good feeling, at least for me.

I used Steely Dan's "My Old School" too. I love that song. The musicianship is incredible and I'm just so surprised that it didn't chart higher.

Thank you for including the link to the 1974 People Magazine article on Alice Cooper. It was an interesting read for sure. How funny that Binghamton banned them playing in their city -- and then Alice deciding to premier his new movie there. Lol.
I did so hate reading about the audience tearing that poor live chicken apart though. Oh my God, that made my heart ache. It's probably that kind of crowd reaction and the press about it that made Binghamton ban the group. I do remember back then around that time with all the hoopla and rumors that circulated about his live shows. I have never seen him in concert and frankly, had no interest in seeing him after hearing some of the rumors about him biting the head of a live snake off and all that other gory stuff. I don't know if that was true or not but it was a real turn off. I do though so love his great hits (Schools Out, No More Mr. Nice Guy, I'm Eighteen, Billion Dollar Babies).

This School theme was fun. Brought back some great memories of those so long ago days...
    Have a great week!

  9. I always think of "Just another brick in the wall" by Pink Floyd when school songs are mentioned.
