Halloween Horror

Happy Halloween to all those who celebrate.

Believe it or not, these decorations are from at the skilled nursing facility my mother in law lives in, in the Triple Cities of upstate New York.

This is the first time in many years that I have had regular visits to a skilled nursing facility.
It does make you wonder to see a skilled nursing facility decorate like that, given that it is a place where some (not all) residents never leave.  It does make one think about our mortality.  How better to cope with our fears than to face them, some would say.

So, I wasn't surprised to find out that a different facility in our area does this one better.

That nursing home has an actual haunted house.
The haunted house has been in operation for some 12 years.  It started out as an event for the residents and now is open to the entire community, free of charge.  Our local high school even helps with the decorations.  It's only open for two days, but still has become a favorite destination.

Of course, nature can give us its own scares, too, such as - well, how about green trees on October 30?  That never would have happened years ago.

But I do have some fall foliage for you tomorrow - here's a little taste, complete with another green tree.

Why is it scary?  Think of it if snows, and all those leaves are still on the trees.

We'll hope for a mild fall.

Day 31 and the final day of the Ultimate Blog Challenge #blogboost.

  1. Green leaves + snow = disaster. I’ve seen it.

Our leaves are just starting to turn, but our forecast calls for sunny skies.

    Happy Halloween.

  2. Why are green leaves + snow a scare?
Yes, it is kind of spooky that a nursing facility (nursing home) would have such decorations if you think about it. If you just look at it as the trappings of a familiar holiday, it's not so scary.
Thanks for a bang-up post at the end of the Challenge. Happy Halloween! We always have my two nieces over to the house after their kids go trick-or-treating. We have doughnuts and cider. It's such a lovely time and getting to see the kids in their costumes is fun. It makes me think of my mother because she loved that so much.

    1. We can get snowstorms in mid to late October. Such snow is normally the heavy, gloppy type. If leaves are on the trees the snow sticks to the leaves and the trees can fall due to the combined weight, as you know. What is scary about lots of green leaves is that those leaves aren't going to fall for a while longer. Every day that passes is an increased threat of snow. So I look at those green leaves and think "uh oh".

  3. Fingers crossed for no snow until the leaves are gone! Happy Halloween. We've decorated with cobwebs, a thick coat of dust, and papers in disarray. Oh wait, our house always looks this way.

    1. I have enough cobwebs in my house for many Halloween displays. Maybe I should gather and sell it!

  4. Once as part of a high school program I worked with we created a haunted house where the kids could use some of their technology and programming skills. It was crazy popular and probably one of the reasons we lost our permanent space at the school about a year later. It would be a great way to bring the community into a nursing facility or retirement home. What a great opportunity for the residents.

  5. Back when I lived in Ch'ville, I was a JayCee. And, we ran the local haunted house. It was a thrill to see the terrified looks of those who ventured inside (and to experience a few of the special 'trips'). The best thing- those funds we raised were among those we used to build and equip Camp Virginia JayCee, that (still to this day) provides summer and winter experiences to those with mental handicaps who reside in the Commonwealth.

  6. What's so bad about green leaves and snow?

Yeah, I'd wonder about Halloween decorations in a skilled nursing facility. But they would want to keep up with the season.

  7. It's interesting the way we celebrate Halloween in this country by trying to scare ourselves. It can be a fun holiday but I had a different take on my blog today.

Here's hoping you get your mild fall!
