Thanksgiving Woodpecker #SkywatchFriday

Yesterday, we took a Thanksgiving walk in a local park.

The skies were mostly overcast, with occasional appearances by a shy sun.

At this time of year, where I live in upstate New York, this is what the sky looks like, day after day.  We live in one of the cloudier areas of the United States.

But then, something distracted us from the peek-a-boo game with the sun.

As we passed a tree, we heard a sound like rustling.  I wondered if it was a woodpecker.  I craned my neck to see if I could see it.  No luck.

So I started to circle the tree as I kept hearing rustling sounds.

Finally, I saw the woodpecker.  It was (I think) an Eastern Downy Woodpecker female, investigating (not hammering) a hole in the tree.

See the center of the photo - a black and white bird

I was amazed the bird didn't fly away as I raised my phone and started to take pictures of her working the tree.

Of about 12 pictures, these were pictures I found the bird in.  This  iPhone doesn't do well with gloom, either.  These pictures are overexposed.

Sorry, but my iPhone SE first generation (2016) doesn't zoom too well, as I mentioned before.

(Here, the bird is in the crook of the tree, barely visible).

We watched for several minutes, then moved on.

It's wonderful that Nature gives us free, safe, socially distant entertainment, if only we take advantage of it.

I hope each of my readers had a safe and good (under the circumstances) Thanksgiving.

  3. I used to love seeing woodpeckers, but now they peck holes in the siding of my house that has cost me quite a bit to have repaired and they pack at my fireplace, scaring the bejeezes out of me. I still enjoy seeing them, but only from afar.

  8. We don't normally get many cloudy skies in the area of Saudi Arabia where we are - mostly beige! How cool to see a woodpecker on your outing.

  9. To me it is a blessing when a critter doesn't leave when you get a little close.
