The Carnation Tree

My post today is simple - the flowers of a tree I call The Carnation Tree.

Actually, it is an ornamental cherry tree, perhaps a Kanzan (or Kwanzan) Cherry.  This is a double flower and, to me, they look just like carnation flowers.

Too bad they don't have a scent.  The trees that bear these beauties are short lived (maybe 15-20 years) and those blooms are messy when they fall off the tree.  I don't own one, so I get all of the pleasure with none of the pain.

The trees themselves originated in Japan, China and Korea, from what I've read, and were first introduced into the United States in 1903.  The first record of the tree seems to be from around 1681.

This may have been a natural occurring hybrid, as cherry trees will create hybrids in the wilds.

I'm a little sad when they fade away, because it means much of the spring flower show is over where I live.  But, on the other hand, they are so beautiful while they last.

  4. Those are amazingly beautiful, being ruffly and double. Too bad they don't smell nice. Also, too bad they are messy! I wouldn't want one, messy and pretty for too short a time, and no fruit to make up for it!
