Flowertown

We are up to the letter F at the Blogging from AtoZ Challenge, where thousands of bloggers are blogging six days a week, basing their blog posts on one letter of the alphabet.  I am using the theme of America the Beautiful for most of my posts.

Queen Anne's Lace from Last Year with Snow Topping
I appreciate flowers so much at this time of year.  Here is an example of a typical flower you may find where I live in upstate New York (photo taken yesterday by my "guest photographer") in early April.

On the other hand....

Summerville, South Carolina, is called "Flowertown in the Pines".

Flowers.  As in, REAL FLOWERS.
We will not see azaleas for several more weeks where I live in upstate New York. But, in Summerville, South Carolina, the azaleas are in bloom right now.

This picture was taken in Summerville (about 25 miles, or 41 km from Charleston, South Carolina) during last year's Flowertown Festival. This festival normally takes place at the end of March or beginning of April in their Azalea Park.

Appropriately, this variety is called the Pride of Summerville.
Here is a purple azalea.
One more shot, this time azaleas near water.

There is a lot more to this park than azaleas.  It is worth a visit if you are in the area.

Spring takes a long time to come where I live.  But I have my memories of South Carolina warmth and beauty to sustain me until then.  One day, the breezes will turn warm and we will be complaining that it is too hot.

But the heat will bring the flowers, and I will be happy.

Do you have a favorite flower?

Tomorrow - a garden people come from over the world to see.  And it is in someone's yard.

  1. The Azaleas are beautiful and one of my favorites, too, but alas our West Texas soil does not support them in my flower beds. This time of the year here in Texas we are blessed with Bluebonnets and an array of Texas Wildflowers. Like Flowertown, SC, we have the Bluebonnet Travel Trails and Festivals throughout the Hill Country's highways and byways. This year, with the rains we have finally had, the Bluebonnets and Wildflowers are spectacular.

  2. How wonderful to see such pretty flowers. Everything is still brown and grey here, so it was a delight to see the photos.

  3. Visiting from the Challenge. I LOVE this post. Coincidentally, I have asked my family to plant some azaleas along the path to our front door for my Mother's Day/Birthday present (my bday falls around Mother's Day), and I'm in Texas where they are blooming too. These are gorgeous. Am coming back to read your other posts later. ;-)

  6. Love the azalea photos. Right now I'd settle for just seeing some green grass in my yard.

  12. Such beautiful flowers to cheer this winter-weary heart! We have wild Rose of Sharon growing in the backyard, but they're late bloomers - Aug./Sept. Over the years they have evolved from white only, to pink, mauve and two-toned. So pretty! I plant Geraniums every year, because gardening isn't my forté and they're easy. ☺
