Dear readers, winter has returned, again, to upstate New York.
It just won't let go. Never mind perhaps a record warm winter. Winter just won't let go.
We had a dusting of snow last night, with temperatures down into the single digits (F).
This type of light, powdery snow, combined with low temperatures, is something I like to call "Oreo snow". Sometimes, I use my imagination, and think I am inhaling a sweetness that is carried by the cold air.
It even sugar-coats bushes.
But it is no fun to be out in, with the sometimes strong winds of March. Right now, the wind chill is 3 above zero F (-16C).
This is just an appetizer. By midnight Monday night, we are going to get a powerful nor'easter, and the ones that come in mid-March are sometimes the deadliest. Even the southern United States may get snow.
An interesting week ahead.
Call it Jack Frost's revenge.
We're feeling the same way here all the way down in SC! It's going to be 19 degrees here tonight with a dusting of light snow! Unheard of around here!
ReplyDeleteWow. Several times in the past few years,I've spent several days of March in South Carolina (Charleston, or Camden, or Columbia). I know how unusual that kind of weather is!
DeleteOreo snow was a new one to me...I like it! Winter has been a tease here too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a strange winter it has been! I'm looking out my window right now and the sky is white...
DeleteWhen March comes in like a lamb, it leaves like a lion. This whole winter has been a lamb, and I don't think we're off the hook, yet. I'm also anticipating hurricanes, this summer.
ReplyDeleteThe weather is stranger and stranger. Holly, we both know why, although many are in denial.
DeleteYep. In denial, or looking forward to a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world. We've given them too much interesting fiction. Made all their archetypal hero and anti-hero fantasies look possible.
DeleteWe still have 200,000 homes without power and overnight temps in the teens. No snow thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteThat's rough. We have thousands in Rochester, NY still without power due to that terrible windstorm. What terrible weather it is. So fortunate to have heat!
DeleteI am dreading the coming storm.
ReplyDeleteYou'll get it worse than us...good luck!
Deletebeautiful pictures from the snow.
ReplyDeletebest
susa
Thank you.
DeleteKeep warm and safe!
ReplyDeleteI will try my best to!
DeleteOh Alana ! I can imagine how you must feel after a brief spell of 'non-winter'. My grand daughter just returned to NJ after a fortnight of blazing sunshine and blistering temperatures in a Mumbai February and was completely shocked by the snow that met her there..... Don't envy you even though we've begun to sweat in this heat.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to sweat, but we are under a winter weather warning right now and could be getting up to 18 inches of snow - not looking forward to that at all. Be happy you aren't visiting New Jersey right now.
DeleteFirst time I am hearing about Oreo Snow !!!
ReplyDeleteI would rather have an Oreo cookie. But it is kind of neat..
DeleteLoved the analogy Alana and I can see why - sugar coat the bushes..... I am smiling as I was reading this.
ReplyDeleteIts become a little chilly and cold here again even as winter were leaving as the upper hills have had some snowfall and the cold winds are blowing till here!!
Will be a lot of sugar on those bushes after tomorrow, I fear.
DeleteWoaaa that's extremely cold... I don't think I will be brave enough to even step out of my bed... But I am sure it must look beautiful... Loved the comparison with Oreo... I love them.
ReplyDeleteWe had snow Saturday night in North Carolina. It was all melted by later afternoon Sunday, but it's still really cold. Everything was frosty this morning, and they say we have a chance for a winter mix tonight. I'm ready for Spring! Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteI wrote a few line in Hindi, my language when I saw that Oreo snow - I too wrote that it was like powdered sugar - the first look gave me that impression....stay safe - it is frigid.....http://shalzmojo.in/2017/03/guestblogging-book-review-strange-library-haruki-murakami-book-set-japanchinaturkey/
