World's (Fair) #AtoZChallenge

Because I grew up in New York City, I was fortunate enough to be able to make several visits to the 1964 New York World's Fair.


If you want to see small snippets of the fair, you may want to check out portions of this 1964 NBC documentary (complete with the peacock at the beginning that indicated that, if you had a color TV, you would be seeing this in LIVING COLOR.

I can remember seeing the Mexican troupe performing at about 6 minutes into this video.

So many marvels, such as the Bell Picturephone, are everyday now - just not in the form we envisioned them back then.

One of my visits to the Fair was with my 6th grade class.  I can remember standing on a long line, and listening to this song play on a transistor radio.

So, what about today?  This is one of the f w buildings left.

    The Picturephone is too cute! :) Actually come to think of it, not so different from using Skype on a desktop model...

    I was 4 years old when the Fair opened. My strongest memory of the Fair is riding "It's a Small World" and posing for family photos under the Unisphere. And the weird, futuristic street lights -- after the Fair was over, we'd see those piled up in some vacant lot near the Long Island Expressway every time we drove into Queens to visit my grandmother.

    The last photo you posted was the New York State Pavilion. There was a map embedded in the floor. Over the years, the concrete has cracked and has been repaired, and the map has suffered as a result. It's a pity they let it deteriorate like that.

    I would never all that a building!
    I, too, made several trips to the Fair. My friends and I have wonderful times there (especially since we are devoid of parental criticism, um- I mean supervision- not!)

    My family went to the NY World's Fair and the one in Montreal. What an amazing thing that was! Wish they still had them. We saw Eisenhower there as I was waiting to get on a ride. Thanks for this memory today!
