Autumn is such a beautiful time of the year in upstate New York.
I remember, in early elementary school, being given assignments to pick up autumn leaves that had fallen on the sidewalks of my native New York City and bring them to school.
Later, as a Mom, I took my son for walks. We would collect colorful leaves and press them between sheets of wax paper.
That's why, when I decided to take part in the Music Moves Me challenge for today, asking for songs of autumn, I immediately thought of the song Autumn Leaves.
Researching this song, covered by so many artists (the first song on my playlist is a version sung by Nat King Cole), I discovered that this song, which I thought was written by Johnny Mercer, was actually (originally) a French song called "Les feuilles mortes". Well, I guess autumn leaves are dead, but why think of them that way?
This is the first song on my autumn playlist.
Here are the other songs on my playlist:
2. More Than This, by Roxy Music. From 1982, perhaps this isn't totally a song about autumn, but it does mention falling leaves. So why not? (Plus, I love love love this song, especially how Bryan Ferry stops singing and the music keeps on going.)
3. Autumn in New York, here sung by Billie Holiday. The song itself was written in 1934, and was covered by many artists. I had thought about linking to the cover by Frank Sinatra, but decided to feature Billie Holiday's cover instead.
4. Harvest Moon, by Neil Young
5. And finally, from 1966, Leaves That Are Green, by Simon and Garfunkel.
What music moves you today?
P.S. I hurt my back and may not be online much today. But I will come visit you soon!

ReplyDeleteAlana,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you hurt your back. That's a bummer! Your list of autumn songs are good ones and many of which I'm hearing today. I never tire of them, either. It sets the mood for the changing seasons. This week Indian summer continues but then change is coming and then it'll be time to pull out the sweaters and sweats. Take it easy & God bless, my friend!
So, now WE have to go find the links to the tunes you suggest. I'll take your word for it.... :-)
ReplyDeleteBack injuries are the worst. I had a back surgery, and it got me walking again, but it never goes away completely. I wear a copper and magnetic bracelet that has eliminated my pain. I even avoided a second surgery with it . . . although my doctor called it, "My body's natural healing." It never bothered to heal before I wore copper and magnets. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI much prefer Billie Holiday singing anything over Frank, so thanks! Hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteGood choices! I picked an instrumental cover of "Autumn Leaves" and opted for Ella and Louis singing "Autumn in New York," because I like how they sound together.
ReplyDeleteGreat choices. I hope that your back gets better. Those are not fun.
ReplyDeletelove this song
ReplyDeleteOh man, you just made my day by including Roxy Music's More Than This in your playlist! I LOVE this song. Sounds superb in my headphones right now. I don't know anything about Roxy Music but I sure know this song by them. It always puts me in a good mood!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry that you hurt your back. I hope it's not serious. I know all about back problems: I have sacroillitis, bulging discs and degenerative disc disorder. All low back. Not fun! Take good care of yourself. Remember to ice and heat! I get a lot of relief from the heating pad. And if you hurt your lower back, elevating your legs on a good wedge might help too.
Take good care.
Let us know how you're doing...

Girlfriend, I have Spinal Stenosis & if there's anything I DO know about that's backs! You get yourself in a nice hot tub & soak for a while. If it still bothers you really bad then you need to hit the doctors and make sure you didn't do anything to it. It's no fun having a bad back that's for sure. You take care of yourself sweetie! BIG HUGS!!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you are feeling better soon! I hate it when my back hurts. Last year, I did something to my back as I was packing to move. I had to have help come in to finish packing! Looks like your playlist has disappeared. But your setlist sounds amazing!

I hadn't really been in the Fall spirit since it's still been so hot here, but today it was actually cool out and I'm starting to think about Fall in New England myself. Hope you're feeling better and enjoying the season soon.
ReplyDeleteI love this season a lot. More than music, i like taking nature walks watching colourful leaves.
ReplyDeleteWow! This is some collection!
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope you are feeling better now, Alana! Backache can be troublesome, I know.
ReplyDeleteYour post reminded me of a poem my 8 year old nephew learnt at school, 'Autumn is the time of the year...'. It's a cute poem and talks about all the things that make Autumn the poet's favourite.
Your post has given me 'homework' - to go check out these songs :-).
ReplyDeleteI should look up these songs. I am not familiar with them as we are more brought up on bollywood songs.
