It's for the Byrds - #MusicMovesMe

It's Monday, and time for some music!  It's time for Music Moves Me.

Who are the Music Moves Me bloggers? We are bloggers who blog about music each Monday and if you have music to share with us, you are most welcome to join! (Music Posts Only-meaning at least one music video, please!)   First, there is XmasDolly.  Her co-hosts are: Stacy of Stacy Uncorked, Cathy from Curious as a Cathy, and me.

We'd love more music lovers to join us.  It's easy! All you have to do is join the linky above with a music post that contains at least one music video (there must be a music video).  And that's it!

Each month we have a guest conductor. Today, for the month of October, we once again welcome John from The Sound of One Hand Typing.

John's theme for today is "Birds! Songs about birds, or songs by bands or artists with bird names, songs with birds in them."

But before we get to the music, a news flash.  Except for January and December, the months in 2022 are open for you to grab. Why not be an honorary guest conductor/host of Music Moves Me, while you are joining us for the musical fun?  You pick two themes - alternate weeks are "You Pick" where bloggers can pick their own theme, and for the other weeks, you pick the theme.  So, why not?  If you are interested, why not contact Cathy of Curious as a Cathy at curiousasacathy*gmail.com?  (substitute the "at" symbol for the *).  Cathy is waiting for your email!

Music time! Let's start with a song from 1965:  The Yardbirds and "For Your Love". The Yardbirds were a musical incubator (get it?), producing several famed artists, including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton.

The Byrds had so many good hits.  I have several favorites, among them Eight Miles High.

The Sandpipers and a song I fell in love with, back when it came out - Guantanamera.  I never knew it was a cover, that many versions exist, and never knew the history of the song.  Artists such as Pit Bull have recorded it more recently.

I am going to move over to Broadway for a minute, and the musical Bye Bye Birdie.  This play, set in 1958  told the story of famous singer "Conrad Birdie" (loosely based on Elvis Presley) being drafted into the Army. He is going to Ohio for his "farewell" performance.

I never saw the Broadway play (although I was a minor player in a sleepaway camp adaptation of the play) but did see the movie (whose cast members included Ann-Margret, Dick Van Dyke, Bobby Rydell, Janet Leigh and others, and featured a cameo performance by Ed Sullivan), and loved it.  For my Bye Bye Birdie selection, I decided on the title song, sung by Ann-Margret.  This song was not in the original Broadway play.

A 2-fer: Bobby Day's original recording of Rockin' Robin from 1958, later covered by the Jackson 5.  Fun fact, Bobby Day's real name is Robert Byrd.

I'll wrap up this session of Music Moves Me with a Beatles song.  The Beatles had a number of songs mentioning birds, and Paul McCartney's band was called "Wings".  My favorite of the several bird songs is "Norwegian Wood (This Bird has Flown)". This sweet song, until you get towards the end, also has an interesting history.

And that's a wrap!

Join me and the other Music Moves Me bloggers next week, same time, same place!

  1. Alana,

Nice selection. I read an interview once given by Ann Margaret. She mentioned her affair with Elvis. The same article likened her to a female Elvis because of charismatic presence on camera. Both stars were rather electric back in the day but I felt sorry for poor Priscilla after reading that piece. I've noticed in recent years the same thing as you that The Beatles have a number of bird song titles which I thought kind of odd. Thanks for sharing your picks with us today. It's great like always sharing a dance with you, my friend. Have a boogietastic week!

  2. Simply awesome playlist and the Yardbirds are right out of my senior high school yearbook. Rubber Soul may have been the first Beatles album that I purchased as it seemed to mark their transition from the boy band that produced I Wanna Hold Your Hand to the super-group that they were truly destined to be. Thanks for sharing your tunes with us this morning. Have a blessed week.

  4. Great playlist. I knew that the Beatles song featured the sitar, but I didn't know the rest of the backstory.

  5. You've got some great ones here! I almost picked "Norwegian Wood," too. The Sandpipers did "Come Saturday Morning," too; had I thought of them, that's the one I'd choose. And I can't believe I forgot the Yardbirds, although I almost grabbed one by Charlie Parker, who was called "Bird" or "Yardbird." Great set here!

  7. Some of those songs sure do bring back memories. Loved "Bye, Bye, Birdie" back in the day. Haven't thought about that one in years.

  8. A lot of nice ones today, and ones I've heard of! I never knew who did Guantanamera, but always enjoyed it. And how could anyone forget Rockin' Robin once they'd heard it?

  13. Excellent selections, Alana! I've never heard of the Yardbirds before, but funny, we have a place called Yard Birds about 20 minutes north of us - it's like an indoor swapmeet! :)
