Is the World Shrinking?

Has anyone else who likes to walk and walks with a smart exercise tracking device noticed this kind of thing?

On my workdays, when the weather is decent, I walk after lunch on a local walking path.  It's the same walking path.  It's been there since the spring of 2020, when it was built.

I understand there can be minor deviations in the number of steps I take but I pay more attention to mileage.

For the last almost year and a half, I've worn an Apple Watch.  It tells me that my total distance is around 1.01 miles.

But recently, it's suddenly decided that I am only walking .87 mile.  Same routine.  Different distance.

How can that be?  Is the world shrinking?  Is there some entity messing with distances and we aren't aware of it?  (Do scientists need to investigate)? Or does Apple Watch have its own opinions about my physical activities?

One other thing I've noticed is that I don't seem to have a good sense of how fast I am walking.  Sometimes I think I'm walking fast but the watch says I'm not.  Sometimes, I feel like I'm dragging but the watch disagrees.

OK, then, feelings of "how fast" are subjective.  I don't hold it against my Apple Watch.

But how can distances be subjective?

Inquiring minds want to know.

  2. I walk regularly, and since I lead nature walks, often considerable distances. I do not now, never have, nor ever shall use one of these devices. I don’t need to know the distance covered, my speed, or anything else. The sense of well-being conveyed by my mind and body is enough for me. If there is any real difference to walking 3.2 km or 3.5 km, it is lost on me. And why would I care?

  3. Distance isn’t subjective. How distance is measured ….when I use the GPS feature in my Fitbit instead of a step count I get a more accurate measurement of mileage.

  4. Seems like a big difference. If it were smaller I'd say you were walking in a different place on the path. Like how a racetrack has the nearer position. Maybe the Apple watch is either more accurate or less accurate.

  5. Very strange. Maybe the length of your strides?

  6. That is weird. My first thought is perhaps your step length changed. Because how does the Apple Watch measure distances? Isn't it in steps. So if your steps have changed length... But really, I have no idea.

  7. That's interesting. My husband just got an Apple watch. I will have to ask him about that feature.

  9. You are quite an observer. But these kind of stuff I am not sure how good there are. And, sorry to say that, I do not like these techniques around me. Could be also your personal energy field that interphere with the watch!
Important is that you do your gym. and this is perfect!
    All the best! ❤️😘
