The leaves have fallen
On the brink of winter poised
Bitter winds coming
What is it about fall that makes us want to write poems?
Perhaps it's the vibrant colors? Or is it something more?
Our vibrant colors are gone, replaced now with rust and bareness. We poise on the knife edge of winter. By tomorrow, the winds will whip and the ground will be white.
But we will always remember fall.
On Wednesday, my guest photographer and I walked by the Broome County Courthouse near Binghamton, New York. It was so peaceful, just us and the squirrels.
One squirrel climbed a tree and dared me to take its photo. - It cocked its head as I spoke gently to it.
I got closer and closer, stopping to click.
Still closer.
And finally, almost too close.
Where workers ate lunch
Only the squirrels remain
Preparing for snow.
Day 19 of NaBloPoMo.
Love that color on the burning bush. Mine is right by the front door and protected so it never gets that rich red.
ReplyDeleteThis was an excellent year for burning bush color here in upstate New York - I wonder if our drought had anything to do with it. Alas, I don't own one.
DeleteLovely! Autumn is my favorite season-feeling the air change with the colors of the leaves.
ReplyDeleteI only dislike fall because what follows. If only we could go right from autumn into spring.
DeleteLove your Worker's Lunch haiku!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I'm not a habitual haiku writer and I don't follow any classical rules. But those photos, I thought, called for one (or two).
DeleteFall's bright colours inspire everyone ☺ nice haiku
ReplyDeleteThank you. I know we are so fortunate here to get the fall color and I love to share it.
DeleteI don't have those fall colors here in Texas so thanks for the photos. Brenda
ReplyDeleteTexas has some beautiful spring color. Happy to provide some fall color for you.
DeleteI think it would be fun to be a squirrel for a little while :)
ReplyDeleteIt certainly would be fun to be able to do some of the climbing and leaping they are so good at.
DeleteSo beautiful....loved the second one more......made me visualize the workers sitting and eating their lunch on bright summer days.....
ReplyDeleteAt lunch in the summer, there are tables near where I took the squirrel pictures - and workers do go there to eat and soak up the sun.
DeleteLove this! Grew up in the area and the photos and poem make me nostalgic.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have many happy memories of this area.
DeleteSuch a beautiful thought, the fall is always a wonderfull. Especially the colours that they bring about around us
