Music Moves Me - The Governor's Playlist

Do you have a playlist on a music device?  Believe it, or not, I don't.  I tend to be somewhat old school with my music listening.  I have an iPhone, but I don't use it for music.  Ditto for an old MP3 player, which I only listen to on trips.  I don't subscribe to any streaming service, although I used to listen to Amazon Prime when it was free to Prime subscribers.  (When they started to charge - well, adios.)

So this from several months ago caught my eye.

In honor of the streaming music service Spotify relocating to the rebuilt World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan, the Governor of New York released his Spotify playlist earlier this year.

What kind of songs did the Governor include in his playlist?  Here's a small selection.  Hint:  not all of them are by New York artists or about New York.

Billy Joel - The Downeaster "Alexa".  A New York artist singing a song about the New York fishing industry, I just love this video.

Bruce Springsteen - Erie Canal.  Bruce is from New Jersey, but the Erie Canal is 100% New York.

Simon and Garfunkel - America.

Art Garfunkel is a native of Queens and Paul Simon is from New Jersey, and they've come to look for America.  This song is a fond memory of my high school years, as I dreamed of walking off to look for America one day.  I loved Simon and Garfunkel.  I would listen to their albums in my room, over and over.

Two New Yorkers (Tony Bennett is from Queens and Lady Gaga from Manhattan) performing the standard "Cheek to Cheek" live.

And finally - I didn't research the New York connection, but I spent many happy hours listening to this album (on vinyl!) back in 1971.   I so love the keyboard playing on this.

Here's the entire playlist, if you are interested.

Connecting today with Music Moves Me, a blog hop and Music Train run by Marie at X-Mas Dolly.  The other Conductors  Callie of JAmerican Spice, and Stacy Uncorked♥  and Cathy from Curious as a Cathy .  Come hop to other blogs now and see what music they are playing on this Freebie Monday!

  1. Bookworm,

Thanks for hitting the dance floor with the 4M gang today. I enjoyed your selection of mewsic. Oddly, I don't recall the first two songs but I really enjoyed them especially Billy Joel's. Although, I like some of Lady Gaga's songs, I don't consider myself a fan but I do like her arrangements with Tony Bennett. They perform well together and I love that Lady Gaga embarrasses elegant attire to fit the mewsic style. Great, fun freebie picks!

  2. I didn't realize Paul Simon was born in Newark. I knew that he and Garfunkel met in elementary school in Queens, and I just assumed he was born in NYC.
Our governor has an interesting playlist. I've got a lot of those songs on my iPod, too.

  4. I'm with you - I don't have any streaming service (though I do, apparently, have access to some of them through my other services) but I haven't put together a playlist or put any of them on my phone. Of course I probably should do that now that we've moved to the boondocks, as there's a nice chunk of freeway when we have to drive places that has no good radio station that's not static-y - playing tunes from my phone would fill in that gap! :)

Interesting playlist the mayor has - some of those are favorites of mine, so he must be all right! ;) Thanks for the dance - have a great week!

  5. I'm like you. My Ipod is full, but I don't listen to it, I have the free songs from Amazon still on my phone, but again... I don't listen to them. Believe it or not, I do the majority of my music listening from YouTube. I love going through the recommended songs and sometimes looking up various artists and just getting lost in the music for hours at a time. It's a great way to get re-acquainted with music or to be introduced to something new.

Thanks for sharing the governor's playlist. That was quite interesting!

  6. That is a very cool play list. Don't if Dan Stec is your state rep in your area. I know represents somewhere in upstate New York.

  7. Maybe there isn't a New York connection to "Riders on the Storm." I couldn't find one, either. Good set!

  12. The Gov has a cool playlist! I love the Doors Riders on the Storm. It's probably my favorite Doors song. Although I've listened to a ton of Doors, especially back in the 70s, me and my "gang" were hooked on them!
Being from Buffalo NY (Niagara Falls), I'm very familiar with Erie Canal...but never heard Springsteen's song about it! So thanks for that! That was cool!
Simon and Garfunkel: so reminds me of college years...

    Great set of music here.
    Have a great week

  13. I have an mp4 player with songs and podcasts on. Your post has reminded me that it's a while since I plugged in my earphones and walked around like a teenage. I'll need to get back to it. Thanks for the prod! Lost on a road trip. #Share Your World
