Fall Color Begins

Taken September 27, our fall color has progressed, but not that much.

Green and red.

Along the Vestal Rail Trail.

A sneak preview.
Local grapes.

Does anyone know what this winter squash is?

We're only at the beginning of the color season.

Just a note, I am having problems with signing into my blog (now, on two different computers) probably because of my cookie settings. I was unable to do any editing or new posts until I resolved it.  I had to clear my cache and cookies on one computer, which led to some unexpected problems on other sites.  For now, I'm not going to touch the other computer.

If this continues, I may have to rethink using Blogspot as my platform.  Apparently, Google doesn't appreciate it when you try to prevent it from tracking you.  I'm not familiar with WordPress, though, and I know there is a learning curve.  We'll see what the coming week or two brings.

For now, I can still post on my laptop, the one I fixed first.  For now.

Compared to what the people of Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, etc. are going through, it isn't even worth my time to fret about it. But if I disappear, you'll know why.

Skies of Late September #SkywatchFriday

Today, a variety pack of recent skies in the Southern Tier of New York, mostly from the past week.

Peaceful park, Tuesday morning.
Trouble brewing, late Tuesday afternoon.
These may have been clouds from Helene, as far away as we were, also Tuesday..

Contrails, last Friday.

A sunny day between rain events, last Friday.

Hopefully, I'll have some fall color for you next Skywatch.

What Do They Have In Common?

Here's a little quiz for my readers.

What do the following companies have in common?  A deodorant company, a bath remodeling company, flavored water, a fitness business, a security business, a couple of tax relief companies, a lose-weight business, a house gutter business, a seafood business, a replacement window business, and a company that insures car repair costs.

I'm not naming the guilty companies with their business names because I don't want to give them publicity.

Answer:  they all spam me.  Continuously.

I have to believe that it doesn't cost much to have someone send emails out to perhaps millions of people.  I'm sure people out there are responding.  Oh yes, I need to have work on my gutters, or I have a window that needs replacing,  so let me click on this email coming from someone with the weirdest email address imaginable who just randomly picked me out of all the people in the known universe psychically knowing I needed their product. Sign me up!

On second thought, don't.

These are all legitimate companies, too.  Most of the business names you would immediately recognize. But if you send me three emails a week, that's spam.  I don't care who you are.  Stop filling my mailbox up.

Do you know how I respond? I don't unsubscribe.  Besides deleting said emails, I don't buy their products.  Period.

No, wait.  There is an exception.  There's one company I started getting spam emails from and it was a beverage company whose delicious product I was already purchasing.  So I decided to email them and respectfully told them I was disappointed they were taking this route.  And you know what?  They responded with this email:

"Hey [AM]:
Thanks very much for reaching out. We apologize for the number of emails that have made their way to you. We sincerely try to balance good commerce with good communication. Certain customers enjoy getting them and some don’t. We are working on getting better at predicting this.

We also wanted to provide this link for you here: [website link] where you can manage preferences and reduce the number of emails you receive from us.

Again, please accept my apologies on behalf of everyone at [beverage company] We really appreciate all of your continued support and are really glad to hear you have been enjoying our [product]! :)

Cheers,
[Real Person's name]

It's nice to know there's a good corporate citizen out there. And (this was a while back) the emails did stop.

Maybe there is hope.

If you've had similar experiences, please feel free to vent, or compliment, in the comments.

Fall Flowers #WordlessWednesday

Some recent sights in our flower garden on a suddenly rare sunny fall day.

Autumn crocus.

Mums.

A cultivated New England aster.

Finally I never have considered cosmos a fall flower.  We had one struggling cosmos plant (of all the ones we planted) and it kept growing bigger, and taller, and did not bloom until last week.  Now, this white seashell cosmos is putting on a fall display for us.  Here's some of it.

Finally, to all my Jewish readers, I wish you shanah tovah umtukah, may you have a good and sweet new year.

Kris Kristofferson

It had to come.  Another induction into Rock and Roll Heaven is underway on this first day of October.

Kris Kristofferson, who died Saturday at age 88 (cause of death not released), wasn't exactly a rock and roll singer, true.  He was an actor, the son of an Air Force general, a Rhodes scholar, a singer, a Golden Gloves boxer, a rebel who ended up being disowned, a member of a supergroup (the Highwaymen), a song writer, a one time janitor, the ex of Rita Coolidge, a father of eight, and...oh, did I leave anything out?

No doubt, I know I left a lot of things out.

One more piece of trivia? He even played the mentor of a vampire hunter in the movie Blade.

So, what do I post here to show his talent?   The SESAC licensing situation has made it more difficult as I live in the United States, where this dispute is going on.

But apparently, that didn't touch Janis Joplin singing (noting she made some changes) his song Me and Bobby McGee.

Hoping these next two play: Performing Sunday Morning Coming Down with Stephen Bruton.

With Lorrie Morgan - Help Me Make It Through the Night.

RIP, Kris.
