Flood Pole Mystery #WordlessWednesday

For the first winter in a long time, we are doing a lot of walking outside.  Fortunately, the weather has had enough relatively mild stretches (ignoring our 41 inch snowstorm in December).

Lately we've added some new neighborhoods to our routine.  On a walk this weekend, I saw this - a plot of land with poles and a "no mow zone flood mitigation" sign.  It's near the Susquehanna River, in a neighborhood which has had flooding in the past.  I know about no mow zones, but what are those poles for?

  1. ...I believe that trees seedlings were planted in these plastic shelves (Poles). Next time look down and see if there is something growing in them.

  2. Quite possible! There was a house and a side yard next to this plot and I didn't want to trespass onto what may have been private property (although I have a feeling the City took it over after the 2011 flood). But what you said makes sense - thanks.

  3. Good question. We can only say they would be a pain to mow around. Weird.

  4. I was surprised to see little poles go up on my drive way, to guide snowplow. But haven't seen those you show before.

  8. I would agree with TOm. That is what I thought of when I saw the poles...

  10. No mow zone? It's good to get new places to walk. It gets boring walking the same ol' streets.

  11. No idea! Would be nice to see it later on, with no snow. Maybe you will tell us at a new WW.
    Happy WW!
