Happy New Year! |
Are you reading a blog written by the Most Boring Person in the World? No, I just think with age comes wisdom (or something like that.)
When I was young there was no problem staying up until midnight to see the Times Square Ball in midtown Manhattan fall (on TV, although I grew up in New York City.) Later, when my son was young, we would brave ice, snow and near zero temperatures to take him to First Night here in Binghamton, New York. Then, later in life, we sometimes had relatives over. It was a point of pride not to fall asleep until after midnight.
Now my spouse and I are both in our early 60's.
Last night, we were both tired from work. My spouse and I both have colds. So we stayed in, made some hors d'oeurves, opened some bags of munchies, and ate leftover cheese from Christmas Eve while watching streamed programming thanks to our Roku and Amazon Prime.
We watched a James Bond movie, Skyfall, and managed to stay up to midnight. But if we hadn't, that would have been OK, too.
My 17 year old self, had she had a time machine, would have watched in disbelief, rolling her eyes and yelling "borrrrrrrring!"
Later, we will watch New Years Day parades. I will watch my favorite, the Rose Parade, out in California. Watching the floats, covered in flowers, seeds and other botanicals, makes me sigh for the growing season. We are supposed to get snow starting about 5pm, which will transition into a major snowstorm tomorrow.
So again, welcome new readers to my blog. Winter Wonders is normally my Wednesday feature until spring. Due to New Years Day, I've moved it to tomorrow. I have two other regular features, Sustainable Saturday and Civil War Sunday. Other than these, I post daily (and have posted daily since late April, 2011) on any topic that interests me that day. Part of this month, I am going to be blogging about my brother in law, who has autism, and caretaking a relative with cancer, because that is what is happening in my world right now.
I invite you to my January journey. I promise not to be the most boring person in the world.
What is happening today in your life?
Hi Alana,
ReplyDeleteI could relate to this post! I think the reason is, or for me at least, is that I end up staying up more because I think I should rather than because I want to. Consequently, I often give myself a talking to on these occasions, then decide to do what I actually want, and if it means I don't stay up, then so be it - after all, after you've done it so many times in previous years, it can all become a bit 'samey'. What *is* always worth doing, is sharing good wishes for the year ahead, so Happy New Year to you!
cheers,
Gordon
Good advice, Gordon. I never quite thought about the fact that I've had 61 New Years Eve's already, so there is an element of "been there, done that" about it. I'm thinking, for 2015 I should go to California and experience the Rose Parade in person. Now, that would be something completely different!
DeleteDo you know what makes the ordinary extraordinary?
ReplyDeleteThe "Extra".
extra attention you put to everyday things.
You are not boring, you are enjoying your life.
Your Choices.
Your joy is yours.
Thank you for sharing!
:)
The extra attention. Yes, and appreciating the simple pleasures. My son ended up coming over today and doing some repair work on our car - in the cold! What could be better than that? Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI stood at home as well. I was invited to a party, but I decided to be at home with my kids, youtube and a book. My husband canceled his party as well and stood at home watching F1 all night long. The older I have gotten, the less and less I feel to party. I don't think you are boring. I just think that what we valued as fun and excited before isn't what we need now to get by or to ring in the new year! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou are right. What I needed was some quiet company - and my son ended up stopping by this afternoon after all.
DeleteThat was about how our New Year's Eve. Eating chips and dip, watching Netflix and then turning briefly to watch the ball drop on ABC. Just me and my hubby.

Thanks, Cindy - nice to know we had lots of company in the "keep New Year's Eve simple" category. Incidentally, I visited the Weekly Photo Challenge site on Google Plus - interesting. Maybe one day.
ReplyDeleteI also spent New Year's Eve at home - I like it best that way. Wish you a wonderful year. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your good wishes. Have a great New Year.
DeleteHappy New Year Alana!
ReplyDeleteWe had New Years Eve at home, but we spent it with wonderful friends and family :)
Happy New Year to you to, Sophie!
DeleteI grew up in NYC (Queens) and never wanted to head to Times Square on New Year's Eve - way too crazy for me.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you're boring, staying home (safe & sound) with your honey on New Year's Eve can be delightful. I went to a friend's home where we watched the ball drop in Times Square. It was 10pm in our time zone (MT) and after that most of the guests headed home. Boring? No, we all wanted to be back in our own homes safe & sound before midnight.
HAPPY NEW YEAR. Here's to peace, joy & love now & throughout the coming year.
Happy New Year to you, Debra. I lived for several years in Central Time and have to admit (with certain shows) that it was nice to see them an hour or two "early".
