Following by Email

I need your help.

As anyone who blogs on the Blogger platform probably knows by now, the current service that notifies people who have subscribed to a blog is going away sometime in July.

I know it, and I haven't done a thing.

Now that  I know at least two bloggers who have switched to a new service, it's time for me to ask my regular readers, do any of you follow me by email?

The reason why I'm asking is because of this post.  I've read this blog for a number of years and I pay attention to what she says.  So, now I don't know what to do as far as trying to get a list of subscribers together so I can switch my fans over to follow.it, a service that it appears a number of Blogger blogs intend to use going forward for those who want to subscribe by email to posts.

I don't want to spend hours on this process - I have a lot of things I like to do, or need to do (including work for my employer) and truthfully, at the end of the day, I sometimes don't have much to give to the blogging world (as much as I enjoy this hobby) past writing my daily blog post and reading a number of blogs I enjoy.

So, I don't know quite how to begin.  If I download a list, I wonder what I am going to find, and if I find a lot of spam type accounts, I certainly don't want to spend time switching bots or worse over to follow.it.  So, any advise you can give me is also appreciated!

So, what can I give you in return?  Today would have been my Mom and Dad's 70th wedding anniversary if they were both still alive (neither are) and I want to honor them with a virtual bouquet.

I know my Mom loved lilacs and geraniums.  I suspect she also loved petunias, but they couldn't be grown on a New York City apartment windowsill too easily.  So, petunias it is.

I don't have their wedding album (long story).  I wish I did.

These aren't petunias, but rather, (mostly) million bells.

These virtual flowers will have to suffice.

I look forward to any advice I receive.

  1. I do not follow you by email. I have you on my blog page and look for new posts. Since I blog only rarely, I have not done anything about anyone who followed my blog by email. I'm too old to be bothered with every new thing they come up with or want to change.

    1. Denise, I hear you! Sometimes I feel that way too. (I also follow you via my blog roll, incidentally.)

  2. Your link to Liz’s blog is bad. The actual link is https://lawsofgravity.blogspot.com/2021/06/follow-by-email.html

I’m not sure I understand what’s going on. I’ll have to reread her post

    1. I fixed the link; thank you.I'll have to carve out time from being lazy (today I was off) to actually look into the situation, once I read through the other comments.

  3. It's just one click on Feedburner to take a look to see if there are spam looking email addresses and to see how many email subscribers you have. I didn't have any spammy ones on mine like Liz did. The process to switch was quick and easy but I did run into the one problem that took me all day to figure out. I wrote about it here... https://seasidesimplicity.blogspot.com/2021/05/last-try_23.html

If you have a lot of subscribers and don't want to take the time to switch them over just switch out the subscribe by email widget on your sidebar and write a post asking them to re-subscribe if they would like to continue getting the emails.

I hope some of this will help.

    1. Thank you, Martha. I read some of the documentation on the follow.it blog and I think, once I kick myself into starting the process, I'll understand it more. I somehow doubt I have a lot of subscribers but I could be pleasantly surprised. I never knew how to find out, and now I'll know.

  4. Don't do anything! Let the readers who want to keep being notified enter their email again. It should be linked to follow.it now. I know a blog I do follow by email, and the "effort" was minimal for me, in fact, I got an email (from blogger maybe, not the blogger) asking if I wanted to switch to follow.it and all I had to do was click. Your end has a lot of work, but each of us has just one thing to do! Don't stress, let us do it. They'll read this post and know they need to if they want to keep getting emails.

    1. Lisa, I'm curious now about the process. I did find out how to get into my Feedburner account this afternoon. But maybe I'll take your advice, which is a lot easier! I think I am still going to need a gadget from Feedburner for future subscriptions, though.

  5. Hi Alana, Rena McDaniel is well worth the money each year as an admin person and helped me get out of Feedburner and into Mail Chimp, which is much better. If you want to learn more, let me know. Good luck!

  6. Happy Anniversary to your sweet parents!
Golly. I don't know a thing about this. If I have to change anything to survive, I probably won't survive! :(
But I DO follow you on email. That much I DO know!

    1. Thank you, Diane. I'll get something figured out. In the meantime, you won't be getting emails of my daily posts starting in July unless...unless I don't know what, yet.

  7. ...a nice remembrance of your parents Alana. Blogger blogs that I want to follow are on my are on my readers list. Sometimes they don't come up in a timely manner, but what can you expect for free?

  9. But I screwed up. All you have to do is download a file (that there's a how-to for online) and then import that list into follow.it. I didn't see the import button until after I'd done 10X the work that I needed to.

Lisa's idea is the right one. If you don't want to mess with importing the list, just tell everyone to resubscribe to the new when it's switched over.

    1. I'm going to try that import today (maybe) or at least signing up for follow.it. My next two weeks are going to be busy. Thank you for the followup!

  10. Yes, I do follow you and all other blogs via email. The constant "improvements" that benefit only vendors and inconvenience users are very irritating. I do enjoy your blog and hope to be able to continue following. Good luck. I appreciated the remembrance of your parents, made me recall my own.
