If you came here looking for cinnamon roll recipes, I must disappoint you. This post is about daylilies, and some of the best names ever.
Today, spouse and I made our annual visit to Cutler Botanic Gardens in Binghamton, New York to enjoy their daylily collection. But, besides flower beauty, the names are such a delight.
This is now an official hermerocallis display garden
The view that greets you at the entrance.
Here are some of my favorites from today.
Wouldn't you love a no-calorie cinnamon roll? This daylily is named Westbourne Mom's Cinnamon Rolls. I'd love to know the backstory of this name; I wasn't able to find out more after a quick Internet search.
Next up:
Longlesson Flattery.
This is a double daylily but I don't know where Double Dribble comes from.
I love this one, and not just for the name. Presenting: Last Snowfall.
Last one for today - how about more in a couple of days? This one is called Custard Candy.
Let's say goodbye for now.
Cutler Botanic Gardens is a little hard to find, but it is right off Front St, a major Binghamton street, easily accessible from I-81 (except maybe this year, where there is nearby road construciton.) Nearby, on Saturday mornings, there is an indoor farmer's market, and there is a Taste of New York store (closed Sundays) nearby, which has spotless bathrooms, and the most wonderful ice cream (by the scoop).
Want to see more? I'll end with this link to a site where you can name a daylily yourself.
..some plant names are beyond me!

DeleteThese are just beautiful, Alana! Such a treat!
ReplyDeleteWe're just heading home from the Rocky Mountains (the smokey mountains of Canada right now due to the horrendous and tragic fires burning everywhere.) We stopped off to see the LDS temple in Langley, BC, and what should they have in their extensive gardens but day lilies! And because of your wonderful pictures of past lilies, I was able to identify them for my granddaughters! Gramma win! You made me look good!
I'm happy you found a garden to enjoy, and hope you had a good time despite the smoke. Our smoke haze is back again and I can't imagine what it is like as you get closer to those fires.
DeleteI was at our Master Gardeners' yard and plant sale today, and walked through the daylily garden there. I didn't see any names, which disappointed me. Maybe there were signs hidden under leaves. I like that double one, Double Dribble. I don't often like the looks of the doubles, they look deformed sometimes as petal-y they are! What a nice day you two much have had.
ReplyDeleteAm I missing the name a daylily link?
It didn't work, because the link insert didn't take. Not that I tested it to be sure before I hit "publish". It's corrected now, and it will also appear in today's post. Thanks for alerting me! (Also, I misspoke, we visit once a year for the daylilies - we also visit for the roses in June. It's a small garden but free, and it is so well kept by volunteers.)
DeleteI don't think the link worked. I would have liked to name a daylily. Such cute names featured here! Looked like a fun outing to do with your hubby!

Thank you, Carol.
DeleteThose blooms are great, the cinnamon roll named ones are really lush. I love gardens!! Especially if I don't have to work on them.
ReplyDeleteGardens you don't have to work on are the best!
DeleteThose are such great names. I wonder who comes up with them. Who gets to name a flower? I would suppose the person who breeds it for the first time?
