Taken around 10:20 pm last night outside my home in the Southern Tier of New York with an iPhone 13 mini and, I'm assuming, night mode.
This didn't look anything like what I saw with my eyes which was just a sort-ofpurplish glow in the sky. I live in a neighborhood with a lot of light coming from houses and some street lights. You can even see stars in this picture.I don't often do night photography, and my iPhone 13 mini insisted on a three second timer.
So I don't know if that is technical "cheating" but wow, those colors. These photos are not manipulated in any way other than the three second delay.
Some stars are visible here, too.
I thank the co worker who texted me just after 10pm and told me to look at the sky. She lives up on a hill and I hope she had a better view.
Timing is everything. I went out again about 11pm and it was (surprise) cloudy.
How fortunate I was.

Some people in our local area saw the aurora borealis, surprisingly, as we are quite far south. When we went out to look, we saw nothing . . . well, just the usual night sky.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful

The colors are just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI actually didn't look as I assumed it would not be visible here near the Gulf Coast. But a memory that I treasure is the event that occurred when I was around twelve years old. My parents and I went out to look at it, and wow! I do not have adequate words to describe it. But I can see it vividly in my memory even now.
ReplyDeleteThe message went out on Bluesky, but I never did go out to look if I could see it. Last time we were too far south. Amazing skies.
ReplyDeleteYour photo got that color well!
ReplyDeleteI mean phone...
DeleteWhat a lucky break to see the aurora! Seems amazing to me, but people in the Joshua Tree area were able to see the aurora last night. Wish I could have been out there!
ReplyDeleteLovely sky photos.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant colours.
ReplyDeleteMany photographers are stating that their pictures of the aurora are much different than what they saw with the naked eye. It’s kind of like sunset photos sometimes come out extra brilliant.
ReplyDeleteGreat captures!! I feel left out. Many people in rural Oklahoma were able to take photos of the aurora.
ReplyDeleteI've seen quite a few photos recently of purple sky, from Florida to Texas. Some have said it was due to hurricane conditions. The most exciting thing I ever see in the sky are a double rainbow.
