It's not fall yet where I live in upstate New York. Yet, the stores insist that it is.
They are selling Halloween (October 31) candy. Pumpkin spice snacks. Mums (a fall flower). Scarecrow decorations for the lawn. The parade of goods screams "autumn".
I refuse to give in.
I will turn to my summer flowers.
Flowers, save me from autumn!
Black eyed Susans from the Vestal Rail Trail.
One of my dahlias,
My lobelia.
Some of my gladiolus.
Dianthus on the West Side of Binghamton, New York.
And finally, a Rose of Sharon.
I refuse to give in to the onslaught of fall merchandising. But the weather seems to be listening, too. And each morning, the sun rises later and later.
The sun sets earlier and earlier. The birds don't sing before sunrise anymore. Even the sun is trying to say that fall is coming.
It can't be.
Don't take my summer away.
Welcome! I hope I bring a spot of calm and happiness into these uncertain times. I blog about flowers, gardening, my photography adventures, the importance of chocolate in a well lived life, or anything else on my mind.

Why, oh why, do retailers rush the seasons?
ReplyDeleteBecause retailers need to utilize the space, I am told. By August, people aren't buying a lot of summer stuff. Space is money in a brick and mortar store. Enough people love candy, and if you have a display of Halloween candy, as one example, they will buy some and eat it now.
DeleteYour flowers are lovely. I was in the store and they had all these fall decorations. I cannot think that far ahead, especially when temps are in the 80's.
ReplyDeleteNeither can I, but someone I know who works in retail explained the logic (see my response to Songbird, above).
DeleteYour flowers are lovely. And it's definitely still summer here where I am in NC, and I'm guessing NY has some summer days left to come.
ReplyDeleteI also, am bemoaning the "slipping away of Summer". I have not yet really partaken of it. But, in all honesty, I feel like this EVERY year. Which makes me wonder...... "Why do I feel this way? Do I expect to much of Summer? Do I perhaps take it for granted? Am I perhaps not fully engaged in Summer? This sounds silly, I know. But, it truly is a struggle for me, and it makes me kind of sad. What do you do to"celebrate Summer"?
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to believe that in only five months we'll be wondering if summer will ever come again.
ReplyDeleteSadly true, Susan.
DeleteThank you -- I hate it when people starting talking fall at the beginning of August -- I don't start thinking fall until the middle of September!
ReplyDeleteI try hard not to think of fall until fall, but it isn't easy.
DeleteNo! I deny fall. It can fall back until late September. Until then, be gone before someone drops a house on you, too. You have no power now!
ReplyDeleteThose icy fingers of fall are starting to wrap themselves around my town. The Spirit of Halloween store is opening....
DeleteYou should be pleased they aren't selling cornucopia for Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteGive them a couple of weeks.
DeleteYour flowers are absolutely beautiful! And I'm with you. Out here in Idaho we just cooled down to the low 90's. We've got plenty of summer left to enjoy or endure depending on the heat and I too will not be purchasing anything fall-ish just yet. I am however making Christmas presents and other seasonal items to be brought out at appropriate times. :)
ReplyDeleteI am grateful we didn't have the same heat as you did. No way I could think of pumpkin spice while roasting. Pumpkin seeds, now, I could roast.
DeleteFor those of us who make things, it's way past time to start crafting for Halloween. And don't even get me started on Christmas. It's too early to be buying decorations and such, but for us makers...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers!
