These times have made us appreciate many things we used to take for granted, such as haircuts.
Almost every conversation my spouse or I had with relatives this week, be they by phone or text, seemed to include a discussion about haircuts.
In my part of New York State, beauty parlors and barber shops have been open for almost three weeks, yet we have not scheduled our first hair cut yet. In New York City, it's not yet possible.
My cousin in Queens, a part of New York City, was able to get a haircut and coloring because her beautician lives across the border of New York City in Nassau County ("Long Island"). They are further along in their reopening. But her husband's barber is in the City, so he stays uncut for now.
My spouse's cousin lives in Westchester County (just north of New York City), which is in the same phase as Long Island, and you can get a haircut there. So she has her first haircut scheduled for Thursday.
My cousin in Harrisburg, PA is going to visit his barber when his county moves into the "green" (Pennsylvania uses a red, yellow, green light system, rather than New York's four phases) on June 19.
I haven't tried to call my hair stylist yet. I don't know if she is going to resume her business but I was also concerned about stories of hair stylists exposing customers to the virus. I wanted a little time to pass before I made my appointment. I've gone to her for years - many, many years.
I'm hoping that the three month shutdown didn't mean the end of her business.
So many people have suffered over the last three months. And if we had gone back to, say, November of last year and then moved forward in time, would we have begun to imagine what we would find?
Now, we can (if we haven't already) look forward to our first haircut. As we marked our childrens' first haircuts, will we also mark our first pandemic haircuts in some way?
Many already have said farewell to their quarantine hairstyles. Have you?
Welcome! I hope I bring a spot of calm and happiness into these uncertain times. I blog about my photography adventures, flowers, gardening, the importance of chocolate in a well lived life, or anything else on my mind.

I finally did after 4 months
ReplyDeleteOurs here in Steuben County opened 2 weeks ago. I finally got mine done last Thursday-no color, that's not allowed yet. Also, you have to sign a form-a list of questions that you are Covid free. It is contract tracing, btw. ANYWAYS, It felt good to get a haircut. Have a great day friend.
ReplyDeleteMy friend Erica owns a nail salon. About 15 years ago she added two stations for hair and also other services, but her business was always primarily nails. Ironic that she can reopen now but only for hair care
ReplyDeleteI just got my much-needed cut a couple of days ago. And our hairstylist has been open for 3 weeks as well.
ReplyDeleteFunny how last November looks like the 'good old days' now, isn't it?
Just got a desperately needed cut and color last week. Had to have my temperature taken, was masked, and spritzed with sanitizer but it was worth it.
ReplyDeleteI used my dressmaking shears to lop off what was hanging on my neck. Salons were supposed to open yesterday.
ReplyDeleteLike you I am willing to wait a few more weeks. I have had the same hairdresser for 39 years. She went to my son's home during the shut-down and cut his hair.
Hubs went yesterday but I won't be going for a while now. I used to straighten my hair every day, now I just let it curl, which makes it shorter, lol.
ReplyDeleteDue to the arrangement of the Jewish calendar, I was thwarted from getting my haircut for Purim, then Pesach, then I couldn't get one until Shvuout. Now, NEXT week, the barbers and salons are opened and I have my sheep shearing appointment.
ReplyDeleteI have a really bad habit of taking a year between haircuts. So, to be clever, me and my hairstylist decided to schedule a haircut in three months so I wouldn't go too long again. Alas, it was scheduled for mid-May. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteSo, my hair is where it usually is this time of year. We've opened salons here, so I should call and check. Maybe.
Nope, no hair cut yet! I thought of getting one in March before things closed up, but then realized that was a really stupid idea. I am in no hurry. It's just hair!
ReplyDeleteI got a cut right before the shut down. But my hubby is looking a little shabby or should I say chic. Mask aren't popular here and he isn't going to take a chance
