With the bad things happening - COVID-19, wildfires, derachos, hurricanes - it is so tempting to slip back into the past. The past where nothing ever went wrong, and we can bask in the rosy glow of good memory. Bad stuff happened, but not in these memories.
These are good memories, memories of music, memories of a time that seems carefree now.
August is full of cancelled events this year. The latest one would have been today - Porchfest.
I'm going into that past, a past where a neighborhood could invite musicians to play on their porches, and people would father together, social distancing an unknown concept, and enjoy each other's company.
We could be neighbors without fear.It was all free. You could wander from porch to porch, and crowd in all you wanted.
Now...
We are left with memories, and we walk alone.
...in this community there was always several festivals each weekend, but not this year!
ReplyDeleteSo true for many of us, Tom.
DeleteGood memories always wake joy.
ReplyDeleteThat is true Susan. Yesterday, I was not happy. Today, when I thought of Porchfest, it did bring me joy and my day was different.
DeletePerfect song choice, Billy Joe captures the mood so perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI can run hot and cold on Green Day, but I absolutely love this song and it just came to me when I was writing this post. Yes, Billie Joe's lyrics are perfect.
DeleteI wonder if you could have done something like that this year. If you kept people distant. But, I suppose music is one thing that spreads the virus. . . I keep thinking of all the things we'll appreciate all the more when this is all over. Of the stories we'll tell about the missed year. And how this year is highlighting so many things that are problems that we never thought of before. I think we, as a culture, are going through some powerful lessons now.
ReplyDeleteI think it would have been hard, Liz, to hold this festival. Some of the groups that play are so popular that everyone just jammed together, like in the last picture. You can't tell from the photo but that backyard is one of the largest on the West Side of Binghamton, New York (where Porchfest took place) and crowds were overflowing into the street. As a side note, the group that performed in that last photo has done a couple of free pop up concerts in venues where people in cars could social distance this summer. That may be the future of Porchfest, but then it would lose the entire neighborhood vibe. So...yes, we will form new traditions, for good or not.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like so much fun. I haven't been to a block party in about 10 years. Yesterday I was feeling sad and I told my husband that at times, I really miss my "mommy and daddy" - the way they were when I was a little girl. That's the first time I have felt like that in years.
ReplyDeleteI loved your post - it's good to think back on the good times -
These are the thing I miss during covid
