It's fall here in the Northeast United States. Many of our trees are closing down for the year.
The leaves will be back next May, all nice and green. But, only in the fall do they show their true colors - the colors that are usually hidden by the green chlorophyll,which allows the leaves to manufacture much of the food the trees need. In the fall, the chlorophyll breaks down as the leaves stop food manufacture.
The true leaf colors are then revealed.
This explains the fall leaf turning process in more depth.

ReplyDeleteMay? The leaves don't come back until May? Really? Wow. That's a long winter. (I noticed some of our trees are getting a bit of color to them.)
