A Farmers Market, in downtown Canandaigua, New York (on the Finger Lakes), showcases the best of what New York State can offer.
Early apples, some heirloom, most of them tart. I came so close to buying some, for the first apple crisp of the year.
Sweet corn - last week for this vendor. To my surprise, this was all yellow corn. Where I live, only bicolor corn (white and yellow) will do, except for some all white at the end of the season.
What a symphony of color, including grapes you will not find in your normal supermarket.
Current tomatoes, filet beans, huge and soft heirloom tomatoes, carrots, onions.
And, perhaps for supper tonight, one of these stuffed breads.
I dedicate this post to the future me who, hopefully, will read this next February when the freezing cold winds blow and snow coats the sidewalk like an icing of Oreo filling.
Summer will come again one day, or so we are promised.

I love going to my local Farmer's Market. The best apples ever. Once you try all the wonderful varieties, this time of year, it's hard to buy store bought.
ReplyDeleteWe are so fortunate to live in an area where heirloom apples are still grown. They are nothing like the usual supermarket apples.
DeleteI love farmer's markets. They're the best. I was in Canandaigua a few years back and it was lovely. I wish I could have stayed longer and seen more.

DeleteI get totally carried away at markets. I had wonderful stuffed breads in Russia, piroshki, and have no idea where to find them here.
ReplyDeleteYou are making me hungry. When we lived in Wichita, Kansas years ago, we used to be able to buy something called "bierrocks" which I suspect are similar to piroshki.

ReplyDeleteI wish it was local, Parul, but it is about a two hour drive from where we live. Alas, because our local Binghamton farmers market has evolved from grower-only to something allowing some imported items - a move I do not personally believe in.
