Garden Bloggers Bloom Day and Happy Birthday Tajiri- April 2018

It's spring, here in my upstate New York zone 5b garden in the Binghamton, New York area.

No, wait, it's.....winter again.

This is the winter/spring millions of us will remember, with snowstorms and the most variable weather going into mid-April.  Where I live, on Friday it got up to 75 degrees, yet we had the forecast for possible freezing rain today.

It's Garden Bloggers Bloom Day, a monthly 15th of the month meme brought to us by Carol of May Dream Gardens, and I am so happy to say, I finally have outdoor flowers!
Crocus.

White Lenten Rose.

Meanwhile, indoors, I have added an orange Easter Cactus to my collection.

I have a number of plants I was able to overwinter, and some of them are blooming for me, such as this red geranium.  I took it outdoors yesterday to give it a breath of fresh air.

Ditto for this pink geranium.

And this begonia.

Before I go, I want to wish a happy first birthday to someone special - someone who helped put a small animal park about 20 minutes from me "on the map", as they like to say, when the owners live streamed from a webcam on a pregnant giraffe last year.  The mother, April, became an internet sensation and groups devoted to her still exist on Facebook.

Happy birthday, Tajiri.  Only two months old when I visited them last July 22, (Tajiri is barely visible on the right of April), Tajiri is now 10 feet tall and weighs almost 1000 pounds.

Today at 10am Eastern, Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York will livestream a first birthday party - here is the link.
The father, Oliver.

Maybe one day, it will be green again.

  1. Hello, Alana,

So happy to find another NYS gardener (saw your comment on Carole's GB Bloom Day post).
I'm in Avon, NY, where we did get some freezing rain, but no where near what they were predicting.
I don't have a blog, myself, but I'm going to sign up to follow you.

  5. Someone on Twitter wrote a story. Persphone went home to Demeter, but they got in a fight, so she went back to Hades. There were issues... (Hades mentioned it was April, so she had to leave, but that didn't go so well.) I thought it quite the best explantion for your continuing winter woes.

  6. The calendar says it is spring, but the weather has not gotten the memo. Everyone and everything is confused this year; however, your blooms are wonderful!

  7. Your indoor plants are impressive. I know what you mean with the weather. 83 degrees Saturday and snow flurries and hard freeze tonight here.
