Day Lily Season Begins

Here is a collection of my day lilies, taken July 1 through 4.  Their names, of course, are lost to history as I am terrible at recording gardening facts.

Most of these pictures were taken during a heat wave, but day lilies just soldier on. 

This is a reblooming day lily. 

Pink and yellow.

Finally, a large yellow.
 

These aren't all of them.  Several have shadows on them (like my lovely spider day lily) and I may post them next Sunday for Shadowshot Sunday.  

Daylily Display in the Shadows #ShadowshotSunday

My shadow pictures today are more day lilies blooming in my yard taken yesterday and the day before.

I love daylilies.  I wish I had a larger yard (and a bigger budget).

Some of the names are on my blog from when I bought these but I am too lazy to look.

Almost all of these were purchased from a daylily grower in rural Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.

This is one of my favorites.

This spider is, too.

Shadow Daylilies of Late June #ShadowshotSunday

My day lilies started to bloom about a week ago.

If you like these, there will be more to come. In fact, I checked my blog and I am slightly behind where I was last year.

From Lamberton's Brookside Daylilies in the small town of Thompson, Pennsylvania.  They were supposed to be going out of business three years ago (the owners are in their 80's) but they are still open for limited days and hours.

Also from Lamberton's; daylilies do get into your blood.

The other two are from before I found Lamberton's. 

This one is putting on quite the show.

My only sure rebloomer.  This may be a Stella de Oro; not sure. It does not bloom continuously once it starts.

I've gotten my day lilies in various places. Some were bought at a combination of plants sales including our local Cornell Cooperative plant sale, a plant sale we lucked into years ago in Charleston, and a wonderful day lily business in Penn Yan, New York (Finger Lakes region) called Grace Gardens.  Sadly, Tom Rood, who ran this wonderful business after the death of his wife in 2020,closed at the end of last year.  At his age (he's now 87) he also found he could no longer keep it up.

Bee Balm Action Photo #WordlessWednesday.

Yesterday was a hot, sticky day.  Today it's going to be worse, with the remnants of Hurricane Beryl on their way to the East Coast of the United States.

I worked in the office yesterday, and as I was exiting the car, it started to rain.  It was just a brief sprinkle, but I decided to take some day lily pictures before the rain ruined the flowers.

But on my way to the bed I wanted to photograph, I saw a bee on the left side of my bee balm and I clicked the take picture button just as it happened.

Another bee flew to the same flower and I caught it mid-flight (see right side of flower.

And since I have all these day lily photos, why don't I share a few?  This is probably the closest to a white day lily I'll ever own.

Shadowy June Flowers #ShadowshotSunday

Today, on this last day of June, let's celebrate some of my flowers. 

Orange day lily.

Red ganzania (African daisies).

Variegated geranium.  These are orange but for some reason, always photograph as red.

Peach day lily.

Daylily Celebration

I've been busy today (partially with indoor plants) and I'm a little late in posting.

My dayliles are blooming and it's time to show them off.

It's raining today so I am showing some photos from earlier this week.  Here, ruffled.

I love this color.

For some reason, this one is never facing in a direction that makes it easy for me to photograph because my bed has so many daylilies in it now. Too bad, because this is one of my favorites.

Really, all of them are my favorites.

More tomorrow.  (Maybe).

The Day of the Day Lilies

Hot days aren't fun for us humans, but the plants in my Southern Tier of New York garden are soaking it up. And, the garden has announced that summer is here.

The daylilies are blooming.  These pictures, except for the last, were taken yesterday.

As of today, I have four varieties blooming.  I don't know the names of any of them, because either I forgot, or I never knew (some of what I have bought were "unknown", sold at a discount).

This was the first, already blooming before the 15th of the month.  It has a lot of blooms and buds now.

The second of my collection to bloom.  This may have been purchased in Penn Yan, New York at Grace Gardens.

This, on the side, is a rebloomer.  I'm positive it isn't Stella D'Oro.  I got this at a clearance years ago.  It's a short variety.

Finally, this is one I bought two years ago from a daylily nursery in Thompson, Pennsylvania, Lambertson's Brookside, which went out of business at the end of 2022...and then reopened for a while in 2023...and is going to reopen again for six days (I think) this July.  The owners are in their 80's and I suspect they just can't let go.

Binghamton's Unexpected Garden #AtoZChallenge

For today, I want to show you an unexpected garden that waits for visitors, in clear view of I-81 going through Binghamton, New York.  

I imagine it patiently waits for one of the thousands of cars that pass it each day to pull off the highway at the nearby exit and take a few minutes to wander its paths.  After all, who would expect something like this hidden gem in the Southern Tier of New York?

Residents know.  Now you will know, too.

Welcome to Cutler Botanic Garden.  Tended mainly by volunteers, you can visit it for the best admission price ever - it's free.

Did I mention it's an AAS Display Garden, one of about 350 throughout the United States? Or that it contains a display garden of the American Daylily Society, one of about 250 in the United States?

This garden was given its start by Francis Cutler, who donated the land to the Cornell Cooperative Extension Service in 1978.  The garden opened in 1979.  Its missions include education and just plain enjoyment.  There is also a beautiful small rose garden that is a venue for weddings and other celebrations.

Let's take a look.

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day August 2023

The 15th of the month has come again.  Welcome to Garden Bloggers Bloom Day!

Here in my zone 5b Southern Tier of New York garden, we've not suffered from the horrible excessive heat parts of our country have been subjected to.  Nor have we had flooding rains of some nearby areas, or the fires of others.  We are fortunate, and I am grateful for it. 

My garden, on this 15th of August, is approaching fall quickly, but we still have plenty of blooms.

First, a RIP for blooms no longer with us.

My blackberry lily only put out two flowers this year total on the two plants that survived last winter.  I don't know why they didn't do well this year.

And now, what's blooming.

Cardinal flower. 

Yellow cosmos.

My one reliable reblooming day lily, reblooming.

Just in time, probably my last of these giant yellow day lilies.

Variegated yellow lantana.

An heirloom French marigold I got from a nursery in Ithaca, New York.

Astilbe (full disclosure - taken 8/13). 

Hosta "Guacamole".

Gladiolus and bee.

Pink ivy geranium.

Pink tall phlox, starting to fade away.  There were two bees on this flower spike - one bee is somewhat hidden.

Zinnia- I think Queen Lime.

Red zinnia.

Variegated geranium.  To the eye this is orange but it always photographs as red.  This plant is three years old - I overwinter it each fall/winter but this year I think it's gotten way too big and heavy.

Red day lily (also in time for its last flower).

Orange day lily. I may have one or two more blooms.  This is my tallest day lily and it did fantastic this year.

Last (I have more flowers but I don't want to break the Internet), daylily Fashion Police.  I bought this last year and was told it might rebloom.  It did.  Last year.  This year it never gave me a first bloom but here it is, just in time for GBBD.  It only gave me three buds this year (the third looks like it might open later today) and seemed shorter.  I wonder if it's happy where it is. I don't have room in my main flower bed but we'll see what we can do.  Anything for my day lilies!
