Goodbye to Fall #ShadowshotSunday

Winter is closing in, and with it, the last of good sunny weather.  So let's enjoy these pictures taken November 24.

November Sun #SkywatchFriday

(Before I begin, I believe the mystery object in my Wednesday post has been identified.  Thank you, Tom from Tom the Backroads Traveler, one of our many Skywatch participants.  More on that Sunday.) 

Yesterday, the skies had that grim winter look the skies take on here in the Southern Tier of New York. 

We even had a rain shower not long before I took this picture.

But wait! The sun is coming out!

Actual blue skies.

Things changed so quickly.

Many trees are bare now but some remnants of color remain. 

Not only that, but I got a good reflection picture in this koi pond before the clouds blocked the sun once more. 

We've not had many clear periods in the sky this week.  So much so that we missed all the aurora activity of earlier this week.  Alas.  I can hope other skywatchers captured it.

At least the first snow of Tuesday, which caused many traffic accidents, has melted.

Skies and Fall Colors of October #SkywatchFriday

Where I live, our fall color is peaking, and I am going to treat you to some pictures I took yesterday.  The skies were a bit moody.  Some like fall colors when the sun is out.  Others prefer the muted look.  Yesterday gave us a little bit of both.

For the first picture, I chose an early morning picture of a church I was passing by on the way to an appointment.

I had to brighten this up a little but the tree (a red maple?) was nearly yes, that red.

In the afternoon, I took a picture while my spouse was at an afternoon appointment.

Sunlight on the trees.

Muted colors.

Love that October lighting.

Last but not least.

Alas, by next week, these colors will be gone.  I hope you enjoyed my selections.

Fall Foliage Skies 2025 #SkywatchFriday

It's mid-October, and the skies are changing.

Some days, the sky is so clear and cloudless that the sharpness of the view almost hurts the eyes.

Other times, the dreary skies of November through April try to assert themselves.

Today, I bring you clear and cloudless skies, and some fall foliage, taken yesterday. 

But, I also need to bring you a coming attraction of the skies of the next few months, just to keep it real.  At least, you can still see some clouds in the gloom. 

Taken Tuesday, right after we received the fringe of the first nor'easter of the year.  We were too far inland to be affected that much.

Goodbye to Summer #WordlessWednesday

We are under a freeze watch.  Early tomorrow morning, at our house, we will probably have our first frost.    All things come to an end, and our growing season is no exception.

Farewell, Japanese anemone. 

Farewell, fall flowers at the local botanical gardens.

Farewell, bee on sedum. 

Farewell to basil in the yard.  Farewell, little cherry tomatoes that haven't ripened yet.

And, farewell to  a mystery mushroom, growing at a local botanical garden. 

Fall has truly arrived.

A Break in the Rain #SkywatchFriday

Tuesday, it rained some (finally!)  Yesterday it rained more.  But on Wednesday, we got out to a local botanical garden and I decided to take pictures of the changing sky. 

While I was at it, I took some pictures of flowers that included the sky.

The rows of yellow and red are zinnias.

Perhaps (no promises!) I'll post some better pictures of some of the flowers another time.

Next Thursday the forecast low is 39 F (3.8 C). Our first frost may not be that far away, but then again, October begins on Wednesday.  And, our leaves are already starting to turn, although I don't expect fantastic color due to the drought we've been in.

Mid Month Park Shadows #ShadowshotSunday

Taken about 3:30 pm. This is the season of long shadows.

Along a flood wall, I took a picture of this park's walking trail and the shadows along it..

Have to love the blue skies and warmth.  Today, it got up to 53F (11.67 C).

Early November Foliage and Shadows #ShadowshotSunday

November 3, some of the last of the fall color.

November 5.

The leaves keep falling and we keep raking.

Speaking of shadows, history also has shadows. This is the anniversary of Kristallnact, the Night of Broken Glass, that took place November 9-10, 1938 in Germany.  Here is a description of that event, one that echoes into the present as we face increasing hate in our world.

Let us insure that this history and other histories of hate (so many of them) never recede into the shadows of our memories, to be ignored, denied, or forgotten.

October Long Park Shadows #ShadowshotSunday

Remember when the trees had leaves?

What a weird reflection.  See the disk with the white circle in the middle touching the ground?  Maybe it's a miniature flying saucer.  Or, a dirty lens.

Enjoy the memories of October.   We had a run of clear skies, and it was a great time for shadow photography.

Last Day of Summer #SkywatchFriday

I'm calling yesterday the last day of summer because it was the last day of an incredible streak of mild weather where I live in the Southern Tier of New York.

But it's November 1, and Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday.  I'm not ready to face reality.

So instead, I'm sitting outside on October 31 and writing this post.

But yellow is nice, too.
