A Tale of Two Cameras

I think it's time for me to get an actual camera to supplement iPhone.

I have been seeing so many birds recently.  And, so has my "guest photographer", someone whose pictures I should use more.

She has a very nice DSLR and was able to get these shots of a pileated woodpecker.

Here is the woodpecker, feeding on some grapes.

Now, some of my efforts.

Here is a downy woodpecker that was knocking away on my house the other day, taken with my iPhone SE (first edition) after it flew to my fence.

Some of my other recent bird photos....

My spouse says this is a fisher crow.  It will look like a black blob to you.

Yesterday, there was this cardinal on a tree.  A female came just after I took this but I couldn't get  the capture.  The cardinal is the red blob in the middle of the picture.

Then there was the hawk on a fence in the lower third of the photo.

I'm increasingly realizing that I am missing too many captures with my iPhone. I've enlarged these as much as I dared - otherwise they might become pixilated.

I still need to learn a lot about photography and I believe I need something better.  But on the other hand, I also know photography is more than equipment - so I don't want to invest too heavily until I have the skills to be ready for an expensive camera.  I do need a good zoom, though, which my guest photographer (first two shots above) has with her DSLR.

So, if anyone has a suggestion about a good beginner's camera that is good for bird photography, please don't hesitate to leave a comment below.

Thank you!

  1. I use my iPhone a lot but I do have a DSLR with long lens but you can get reasonable one with an iphone if it has a Zoom

    1. Santa, aka my husband, may be hearing from me soon if I am not satisfied with research on an iPhone lens.

  3. I have a camera, but rarely use it. I have to remember to take it with me, when my phone is so convenient. I need a new phone though, mine is an old 5c. Yes, 5c! I can't get a much newer one, but 7 seems to have a good camera. It would be nice to zoom in on those birds though.

    1. I looked into iPhone SE second edition and it still doesn't have quite the camera of the other current iPhones. For what you pay (starting at $399) various tradeoffs are expected, and the camera is one of them. Alas.

    1. Me, too, but if I can get the capture it's nice to get more than a blob!

  6. That Pileated Woodpecker is magnificent. I hear them calling around our neighborhood all the time but rarely see one.

  7. I had the same issue yesterday. I was trying to get good pics of far away birds, but my iPhone only magnifies so much. Those that went to the wetlands had cameras with telephoto lenses. I know very little about cameras, but it looks like you got some advice already.
