Before and After A Storm #SkywatchFriday

Wednesday, we were under a severe thunderstorm watch.  It had been unusually hot (for us in the Southern Tier of New York) earlier in the week and a cold front was going to be coming through. On Tuesday, we hit 92F (33.3C), which was nearly a record.  I realize that type of heat in May is normal for many, but it isn't for us.

The sky agreed with the forecast.  I took this picture as a passenger in our car as we were moving and I didn't see the structure on the left until I prepared to post this here.

Don't these look like pointers directing us to the center of the photo, which makes you think of the eye of a storm?  The storm itself was still two or three hours away.

About a minute or so later, we're still moving, and I saw sunbeams shining down through the clouds. So I took another picture.

I took one more shot of the sunbeams - at this point we were merging onto a highway so were ready to lose this view.

Sure enough, we had a couple of rounds of thunderstorms later that afternoon, one of which had hail.  Fortunately, no tornadoes were reported.  Yesterday, it was cooler.

Early afternoon yesterday.

And, to end the day, a nice sunset.

  2. I love the sun beam pointers through the clouds. They always say, Stop! Take a moment! Pay attention!

  4. My family loves a good rainstorm--no tornadoes, however, please. Glad your storm was just sound and fury and nothing more! Lovely pictures! I can almost smell the air!

  5. I have been having a terrible time commenting on your blog. Neither my phone, nor my iPad will connect me. Sigh. At least I'm still considered a real person on my desktop!

  6. Those angry skies and storms were the price we sometimes have to pay for that beautiful sunset.

  7. Those were all great photos. 92 is hot for now, we haven't gotten there yet. It's raining now, and humid, which is something I don't care for.

  8. Yes, they do look like pointers ... adding interest and mystery to the brooding sky scene.
