The terrorists struck against New York City again.
Blocks from where I worked so many years ago. Not far from where my childhood best friend's son went to high school. In sight of the World Trade Center.
Immediately, I did a mental inventory. I grew up in New York City. I still have family and friends (including blogging friends) there. Were they safe?
Facebook set up it's "mark yourself safe" function for "The Violent Incident in New York". (Did anyone else do a double take about that name?)
Many cities have felt the sting of these latest vehicle attacks now, from London, to Nice, to Berlin, to other cities too numerous to mention, and now it is my native New York City's turn again.
New York City, as one news station pointed out, is a "dense" city. There are a lot of people crammed into a small area. As I write this, it is the evening of October 31, and a Halloween parade will be starting shortly. People are walking around in costumes. They aren't staying home.
New Yorkers will not be cowed. It is a city that lives under the shadow of fear, and has, ever since September 11, 2001. But life goes on, as it has to.
It brings back memories of a rumor that kept surfacing right after the 9/11 attacks, that there would be another attack on October 31.
Well, turns out the rumor was right - just 16 years late.

But until their cause is officially lost, there will be a lot more pain.
I just heard that this guy was an Uber driver. Makes me leary of using that kind of service. What gets into someone's head that killing innocents can solve anything?
ReplyDeleteSad that 8 folks visiting New York from Argentina to celebrate their high school reunion were among those killed by the crazed Uzbeki.
ReplyDeleteEveryone has a need to make their mark. The courageous build. The cowards destroy.
ReplyDeletefor the first time in my life, I saw my DAUGHTER check herself safe after the incident. She lives in Hell's Kitchen and she works in midtown, but her boyfriend lives downtown....
ReplyDeleteWe will live our lives as best we can. We will put GOOD out into the world. This is a challenge for the ages, but we must believe that Good will win.
ReplyDeleteDensity is deadly. Glad you're OK.
ReplyDeleteSo much anger. Until we can deal with that anger, these things will continue to happen. Peace.
