Last week we celebrated International Women's Day. So why not feature some songs sung, or written by, women?
This first song, You Don't Own Me, was sung by Lesley Gore when she was only 17 years old. Consider this: this song was a hit in 1963, and if you think of it in that way, the lyrics are revolutionary.
Carole King - singer, songwriter. This may not be her best song, but I love the singing and the music both. From 1975, Jazzman.
Carole King also wrote songs sung by many different artists. This hit, One Fine Day, charted for the Chiffons in 1963.
Prepare to cry, listening to Dusty Springfield, sing still another Carole King song, Goin' Back.
My spouse suggested Laura Nyro. My choice here would be "Dedicated to the One I Love",
Virginia Patterson Hensley (better known to us as Patsy Cline), was taken from us at the age of 30, in 1963. Her loss was a great one.

Women We are strong. We are talented. And I could devote many, many more blogs to women in music. Karen Carpenter, Patti Smith, Linda Ronstadt, Petula Clark (still active at age 86), and so many more deserve time in this blog.
Perhaps I should make this a series.

ReplyDeleteI have been a fan of Leslie Gore since forever. Great share. Adding in Carole King (herself and others using her songs), Dusty (no last name needed), and the Mamas and the Papas helped elevate my psyche today.

No one sounds better singing Laura Nyro's songs than Laura herself. Just my opinion. The Fifth Dimension did a pretty good job, too. Great choices here. A couple of other women that I can think of are Cilla Black, Dionne Warwick, and Vera Lynn (she sang "The White Cliffs of Dover" and is still going strong at 101).

WOW, I haven't heard Carole King's 'Jazzman' in a long time. Boy, does that ever bring back some groovy feelings. Thanks for sharing the dance floor with me, my dear. Have a boogietastic week!

ReplyDeleteGreat choices. They, every now and then, show a Carole King/James Taylor concert on public tv and I always make sure to watch it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super idea for a theme this month. There are so many like Marianna Faithfull, Joan Jett, the Heart women, etc. This year's Grammy actually focused on women for once.
