Tribute Time Again #MusicMovesMe

It's Monday, and it's time for Music Moves Me.

Who are the members of Music Moves Me ?  We are bloggers who blog about music each Monday. If you have music to share with us, you are most welcome to join!  Just remember our simple rule:  you must include at least one You Tube or Vimeo video or your post may be subject to removal or labeling "NO MUSIC". You are welcome to write about music. too but we need that video!

So let's get started.

Each month, we have a guest co-host and guess who the guest co-host is this month?

You guessed it (I hope):  ME!

My theme for today is:  "You Pick".

My saddest duty as a Monday music blogger is when I have to pay tribute to a great.  Or a couple of them.  Or even three.  July has not been a kind month, situated as it is in a year that has been way less than kind.

First up (not in order of date of death), Charlie Daniels, who died last Monday (July 6) at the age of 83 from a stroke.  So many people think of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" but I need to admit here that I have a different favorite Charlie Daniel song.  And it doesn't even have fiddling.

What it does have is some fantastic storytelling.  Here is "The Legend of Wooley Swamp".

Here's one other song.  Love his politics or hate them,  he was a big supporter of our vets, and you knew where you stood with "A Simple Man".

Second up was Max Crook, inventor of  a modified clavioline he called a Musitron.  Crook also co wrote Del Shannon's hit "Runaway" and you can hear the instrument starting at about 1:10 in the video.

My third tribute is for J. Marvin Brown, the lead singer of a soul music group called The Softones.  Many think they deserved more success than they received.  I love that falsetto in the song "My Dream".  Brown died July 3 at the age of 66.

And that, folks, is a sad wrap.

  1. ...musical recordings give artists a sense of immortality, a wonderful thing. Thanks for the info on the clavioline, music can have so many voices. For some reason J. Marvin Brown has never hit my radar screen, what a great falsetto! Thanjs Alana for sharing, have a musical week.

  2. Del also used the clavioline in "Hats Off To Mary." I wonder if it's any relation to the ondioline Al Kooper plays? They sound a lot alike.

Charlie Daniels: great musician and great American. 'Nuff said. Remember "Uneasy Rider"?

  3. When Charlie Daniels plays it's time to party to say the least & listen to his story! Great story teller to say the least. Del Shannon, you go girl. That was my big brother's era, so I found out about him through Jr., I never heard of the Softones or J. Marvin Brown, a very romantic voice to say the least. Great job on the tunes my friend. Have a great day!

  5. Alana,

I knew of Charlie Daniels passing. I'm glad you paid tribute to such a mewsical legend and all around good guy. The Softones by name doesn't ring bell and I certainly hadn't heard the mews of Marvin Brown passing. He's only 7-years older than me. That hits close to home, doesn't it? Thankfully, singers are forever immortalized with their mewsic for generations to enjoy for years on. Thanks for sharing, my friend. Have a boogietastic week!

  6. Thankfully, these great artists live on in their music. Charlie Daniels had a fabulous, gritty sound.

  7. It's just so sad to see so many of the greats gone in such a short span. But fortunately for us, their music lives on.

  10. Charlie Daniels had a friend who lived down the street from my BIL. He would often go there and do free concerts. He was an amazing musician

  11. I was a fan of Charlie Daniel's music- and an opponent of his neanderthal politics. (I even took my daughter to more than a few of CD's concerts. And, Runaway was my favorite- it was my dream to escape - and I did!
    Never heard the Softones before.
YOU should check out Dion's new album- especially the ode to Sam Cooke. (It's more than that- WAY more than that!)
