Once again, we've reached Monday, and it's time for Music Moves Me.
Who
are the members of Music Moves Me ? We are
bloggers who blog about music
each Monday. If you have music to share with us, you are most
welcome to join! Just remember our simple rule: you must include at
least one You Tube or Vimeo video or your post may be subject to removal
or labeling "NO MUSIC". You are welcome to write about music. too but there must be at least one music video.
So let's get started.
Each month, we have a guest co-host. The guest co-host for August is Stacy from Stacy Uncorked, Her theme for today is "Family or Sibling songs."
Before I begin to present my selections, I want to pay tribute to singer Trini Lopez, who passed away last week from COVID-19 at the age of 83. Two songs immediately leapt to my mind.
If I Had a Hammer, co-written by Pete Seeger, was a hit for Lopez, reaching #3 in 1963.
Lemon Tree was a cover of a Will Holt song. Besides Trini Lopez, this song has been covered by many artists.
I remember both of these songs from my child. Trini Lopez, RIP.
And now, to our theme.
I don't want to pick any of the "obvious" songs but there are some really good ones out there. Because I am an only child, and someone who lost her mother not long before I turned 13, I am also going to include a couple of tributes to parents. My father raised me after my mother died suddenly, and had to put up with my teenaged years on his own.
I am going to start with a song I've had on my blog, but it isso good, it is going to be repeated.
First, from Mike and the Mechanics, 1989's "The Living Years", about a son's conflicted relationship with his late father, and what he regrets now that he, himself is a father.
Night Ranger and 1983's "Sister Christian". I saw them in concert several years ago, and this was one of the last songs of their set. It was worth the wait. This song is about the songwriter's younger sister Christy, and his feelings that she is growing up too fast.
Finally, as a (maybe strange) change of pace is a song that maybe is more about vampires than a rejected boy's longing for family. From The Lost Boys soundtrack, performed by co-author Gerald McMahon, is 1987's Cry Little Sister. I happen to love this song.
And that's a family wrap!
Join me again next Monday for another episode of Music Moves Me - same time, same place.
WOW! Trini Lopez @ 83! Wow, I didn't know he was still alive, but I do remember his music believe it or not! I believe it was his song "Lemon Tree" now don't quote me on this, but I believe it was Eisenhower's favorite song. If not Lemon Tree I believe it was one of Lopez's songs. Thanks for the update! Daniel is such a pretty song I'm glad Elton John sang it for the gentleman. Night Ranger and 1983's "Sister Christian" I didn't know it was about his own sister. Very cool. The Lost Boys, hahaha good twist there my friend. Have a great day. Plus you did a great job. By the way, my blog will be moving soon.. but I'll let you know when. Actually, I'm moving to blogspot.com Tell me was it hard to figure out to put your blog here???
ReplyDelete...oh how I remember Trini Lopez! Mike and the Mechanics, Night Ranger and The Lost Boys soundtrack never made my radar screen. Thanks for the introductions.
ReplyDeleteNice tribute to Lopez.
ReplyDeleteWe both picked Daniel and Sister Christian ...
Now that was a fun trip down memory lane.
ReplyDeleteAlana,
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I know the name Trini Lopez before now but I'm definitely sorry to hear Covid-19 claimed another life. I love his cover of "If I Had a Hammer". It's very upbeat unlike other versions I've heard. So, are you telling us that "Daniel" is a song about Elton's brother? If so, I don't believe I knew that tidbit but sorta wondered about it over the years if there was some real family connection with the lyrics. Your last song switched my mind to the new TV series we're finally getting around to watching "The Strain" which takes place in NYC, originally aired on FX now all four seasons are on Hulu. It's really put together well. Stay safe and be well, my dear. Have a boogietastic week! ;)
So sad about Trini Lopez. I loved his songs! And In the Living Years is right up there with Hallelujah for me. My two favourites! Thank you for this today, Alana!
ReplyDeleteSad news about Trini Lopez, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteA good set all around. "The Living Years" was popular around the time we moved here, and is a great song. I avoided "Daniel" so I'm glad you had it.
Whenever I hear (and honestly, that doesn't happen much!) Dan Fogelberg's "Leader of the Band" I can't help thinking for my father and one of my brothers. My father didn't "try to be a soldier," but life did get in the way of his music and much of what he loved to do. He never spoke of it, but he was unable to do a lot he loved in life. The Great Depression did that to a lot of people. My brother was (is, I guess you never stop) a musician professionally. Our other brother, as in the song, "heard another call."
ReplyDeleteI was a big fan of Trini!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I fell in love with Mike and Mechanics because that song hit home. (And, wished my family matched that of Conway Twitty's song- the one I used for MY kids!- that's my job.)
Such great and classic songs. Love the Night Ranger tune.
ReplyDeleteMike and the Mechanics is such a great song that we haven't heard since a long time, but so glad to hear it here on your playlist. Great tribute to Trini Lopez. That was a wonderful song. 😸Pawkisses for a wonderful week ahead🐾😽💞
