Oh Come All Ye Memories

Slowly, our record snowstorm is being cleared away, but we have felt a bit marooned.  It hasn't been the first time this pandemic season.

I didn't go to any of my normal holiday activities this year, due to COVID.  Some were cancelled.  Some, I just decided I had gone to see them so many times, I didn't need to this year.  There is one new activity, a holiday light show, I may go to this weekend.

We didn't even get the "Christmas Star" (conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn) last night.  It was supposed to be livestreamed from our local observatory but there was too much cloud cover.  That cloud cover is normal for us this season; I would have been surprised if it had cleared up.

In the past, I have blogged about some of these activities, so I went through the photos on my phone and computer to put those who celebrate Christmas in the holiday spirit.

These were taken in Owego, New York at O Tannenbaum, an annual event at the Tioga County Historical Society.

Trees are decorated by various groups and put up for auction.  There is also a display - some years of toys, some years of historical events.  In 2016, the theme was the circus.  Come right up!
Enjoy the show.  These are antique circus posters of circuses that stopped in the area.

Antique circus toys.

One of the trees being auctioned.  In many years they only auction the decorations, not the trees themselves.  This one is decorated with hats.

In another year the theme was farm toys.

Finally, one more tree memory - a kitchen tree.

This year I have my memories of Christmases past.  Next year, I hope to be back in person.

For those who celebrate Christmas, how has this season been for you?

  2. Very nice.

I didn’t see the planetary conjunction either, too much cloud cover. In a year where so much has been canceled....sigh.

  4. Well, our 57-year-old daughter is baking Christmas cookies for the first time ever. I thought she set the bar a little too high for her first attempt---gingerbread boys--well, we'll see.

  5. Having such great pictures are the next best thing to being there. I hope you make it to the light show.

  6. I love tree displays! And antique toys! These displays would definitely get my motor running (so to speak!). This year, like you, we have remained housebound. So glad we have our memories (and pictures of said memories) to keep us company!

  7. Didn't see it either, it was raining. I don't care for tree decorated with just one thing, as a theme. It looks silly with nothing but hats! I would like to see the collections though, the circus and farm stuff. My holiday is always low key, so nothing has changed. I have the decorations up, stuff to fill my son's stocking. It's a cultural holiday, nothing religious, for us. I am making cookies!

  8. There's a great meme floating about. There's a picture of a clear sky and a beautiful moon with a caption along the lines of "night". Then there's a picture of cloud cover with a caption along the lines of "whenever there's an astronomical event".

I went to look at Christmas lights on Friday and then discovered there was a YouTube video someone had made the same night of the area. So, there are light tours if you are itching for one.

  9. I didn't see it, but my neighbor said there was a car covered in lights with a Happy Chanukah sign. They stopped in front of the house and were singing Chanukah songs. Something new.

  10. excellent trees! So clever.

Photos will do us this year. We have a grandson in Chicago born Oct. 2020, and we haven't seen or held him. His brother was 1 yr. old when we last saw him. Now he is 2 1/2.

We rejoice even so. God has been so good to us all.

  11. What a lovely, nostalgic post. I have been wondering how you are doing with all of that snow! We had a bit in NYC, but nothing like in the Binghamton area. I have also put the holidays on hold, although I decorated my tree and use it for a videoconferencing background :-) Blogging weekly has helped keep me sane, and I am starting to think about what I will write for the A-Z Challenge in 2021 -- only 4 months away. Happy Holidays and New Year!
