Instrumentals of the 1970's #MusicMovesMe

It's Monday, and time for another episode of Music Moves Me.

Who are the Music Moves Me bloggers? We are bloggers who blog about music each Monday and if you have music to share with us, you are most welcome to join! (Music Posts Only-meaning at least one music video, please!)   First, there is XmasDolly.  Her co-hosts are: Stacy of Stacy Uncorked, Cathy from Curious as a Cathy, and me.

Each month we have a guest conductor. Today, we welcome once more- ME!

Before we get going, I'm thinking of the people of  Waverly, Tennessee and surrounding areas, and the tragedy they suffered Saturday with (at this writing) 22 dead and others missing after a storm dumped 17 inches (43 cm) of rain, causing terrible flash floods.

My theme for today is"You Pick".  I had some leftover 1970s-era songs that didn't fit into my theme from last week, where one had to be an artist who played at the Woodstock festival of August 15-18, 1969.

But while researching, I ran across some music I had long forgotten.

This first song was recorded by Henry Mancini in 1971, and many in the United States may know it best as the theme to the long running afternoon soap opera "The Young and the Restless".  I had loved it (the song, not the soap opera), for so many years and never knew its name. I now present Henry Mancini and Nadia's Theme, which was originally called Cotton's Dream  but was renamed for gymnast
Nadia Comăneci, the sensation of the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Speaking of TV themes, how about Rhythm Heritage and the Theme from S.W.A.T, from 1976?

Barry White took the 70's by storm with his music (and oh, that voice). Here's a 1973 instrumental:  Love's Theme.

Also from 1971, although it was on the charts into 1972, is my next selection.  I don't know if you can truly call this a cover, but this next instrumental is inspired by Bach's 1723 composition "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. Enjoy "Joy" by Apollo 100.

This next instrumental uses electronic music, and I have to admit, I love this type of music (usually in small doses). This piece was composed by Gershon Kingsley, born in 1922 (!), a pioneer in use of the Moog synthesizer.  Here is Hot Butter and Popcorn. It's been an earworm for me - will it be for you?

Last but not least, Chuck Mangione and Feels So Good.  Chuck's brother "Gap" still performs with his band on occasion, including in the Finger Lakes region of New York.  I'm positive I heard him ("Gap") perform once at a Binghamton JulyFest but I tried finding it online and it must be a hallucination.

That's a wrap!

See you again same place, same time next week, for my last week of guest conducting at Music Moves Me.

    1. Yes, he was. His death was tragic - waiting for a kidney transplant, as I understand it.

  6. Alana,

I remember Nada's Theme being used for The Young and the Restless. I wasn't a huge fan of that soap but I did watch it on occasion. Barry White's warm barton vocals were awesome. I loved his music! I don't think I remember that Hot Butter did Popcorn but how clever is that? lol I do recall the song, though. Very catchy but after awhile it wears the nerves down. :D "Feel So Good" awww, yeah so 70s! I just loved the decade for its music. Thanks putting a funk in my afternoon. Stay safe and dry, my dear. Have a boogietastic week!

    1. Popcorn is a championship earworm - it does wear you down after a while especially. I don't watch soap operas but a temporary job I had was tuned into The Young and the Restless in the lunchroom at my lunch time, and the music hooked me. That was in 1986.

  7. You picked some good ones here! There's a great album that might be out of print now, "Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 3: The Seventies," and I think most of these are on there.

For a minute, it sounded like you were saying Chuck Mangione had passed on, but he appears to still be alive, allowing me to breathe a sigh of relief...

  9. Such great songs, Alana! Oh, the memories! I remember an afternoon in Charlie's when Joy came on the jukebox. My frienda and I danced the 'Virginia Reel' to it. (Not easy, but it can be done!) We laughed and laughed. Sweet memories...

  11. Hey Girlfriend, How's goin'? Well, my check up was today & I got a refill on my medicine so I was out & now I'm feeling better. So, what do I do when I cannot figure out my stupid blog? Cathy has tried to help me, but to no avail. I'm stubborn yes. I just want something simple and that I guess is to come back to blogspot maybe and plus even though I'm retired I've been so busy with this sickness with my back & leg that I can't think of nothing else. BUT I'm also stubborn & I want what I want and nothing else. I guess & I think I need to come back to blogspot too, but I need to figure it out again. I like your blog, but I really need to figure it out once again. I'm not stupid, but just bull headed I guess. So. I've got to figure this out once and for all. Wish me luck girlfriend. THANKS. Have a great day!

    1. I will wish you luck, because I think your determination will get you there. Pain certainly distracts any of us. It's a terrible thing to live with.

  12. Oh, my! You've outdone yourself. I always loved Henry Mancini- but didn't recall Nadia's Theme. (Who the heck is Young and Restless, by the way?) While Rhythm Heritage is a vague recollection as the originator of SWAT, Barry White's theme was usurped (one of two) by Gorgeous George (now, you had to live in Boston in the 70s' and watch all night TV to get this reference) as it enveloped the East Side Kids, Chuck Chan, and the indomitable George C Scott as a social worker in East Side West Side. (My memory banks are overflowing- and have been flooded by Bach and popcorn to boot.) And, you made me seek out my own copy of Chuck's flugelhorn LP in my basement.
Woo Hoo! What a great collection.

    1. Thank you for your kind comments. The Young and the Restless is a soap opera that has been on CBS TV at 12:30 pm forever (well, 46 years now). It's still on It was played in a breakroom at a temporary job I had at the end of 1986/beginning of 1987 so I saw it every day for about 45 days and fell in love with the theme song.
