Chipmunk Pole Dancer #WordlessWednesday

Today is the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.  Time is speeding along, and it's time to think about - chipmunks.

The eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) is a pest.  A cute pest, I'll admit.  But a pest, one that can be quite destructive for their small size.

Fearless, too.  I've had them go right up to my feet (I don't know what I would do if one touched me, though - scream?)

When our two backyard chipmunks aren't busy digging in my flowerpots or trying to get at our bird feeders, they sometimes put on a show.

Here, a chipmunk tries to get into a fuchsia basket my son gave me for Mother's Day.
I wish they weren't so destructive, though.

  3. The state of Michigan finally changed the law regarding rodents and destructive animals in the yard. A homeowner now has the right to trap and kill, not just release. Well, if I can shoot a human breaking into my home, surely I can kill a squirrel chewing through the exterior? I know someone who had a squirrel chew through the screen door.

  5. Now that brought a smile to my face. It was their world, first. We are the encroachers.

  6. I might just sacrifice planters for that! How adorable! I see chipmunks in the forested areas, not in the neighborhoods. I don't even have squirrels. Other parts of town do, so it's a mystery. I have a lot of owls and raptors, so maybe the squirrels have caught on. Come to think of it, chipmunks are rarer, I see more of the Golden Mantel ground squirrels. Striped, but not on their heads.

  7. Girlfriend I cannot begin to tell you about these little critters! We have a whole nation of these guys around here. I live about 6 blocks for Fox River & we have chipmunks or squirrels or are they the same oh I dunno & rabbits everywhere not to mentions ducks & we have swans, but they're more by the river. When we go to the end of our street which is right by the river they're all over the street and we have to beep the horn so they'll get off the street! hahaha they're so cute though. Some get mean, but some let you feed them. Anyway, I'm still fighting with my blog, but I finally did one for today. Have a great weekend my friend... boogie on Monday!!!! HUGS

  9. I guess they're cute so that we don't get so angry when they destroy things?
