It's Monday. It's time for music! But first, let's introduce the Music Moves Me bloggers.
We are bloggers who blog about music
each Sunday or Monday and if you have music to share with us, you are most
welcome to join! (Music Posts Only-meaning at least one music video,
please!) Our head host is Xmas Dolly, and our co-hosts are Cathy from Curious as a Cathy, joined by the knowledgeable Stacy of Stacy Uncorked and yours truly.
You are welcome to join our Monday music group. It's so easy. All you have to do is
join the linky above with a music post that contains at least one music
video. No music video? Your post may be removed, or may be labeled *NO
MUSIC*. We alternate theme weeks and no theme weeks.
Today's theme is You Pick. I decided to feature today songs that tell a true story, or one that is based on history, or...well, just a story.
Let
me start by paying tribute to Canadian Robbie Robertson, guitarist and
songwriter, who died from cancer at the age of 80 on August 9. Perhaps
one of my favorite of his songs is one he wrote when he was a member of
the Band, which was released in 1969.
This is from the 1978 movie The Last Waltz, the final performance of The Band before Robbie Robertson left them. It tells the story of the last months of the Civil War from the viewpoint of a Southerner, Virgil Caine.
How about some other story telling songs?
Coldplay's Vida la Vida lyrics are written from the viewpoint of deposed French king Louis XVI awaiting his execution during the French revolution. He used to rule the world - now revolutionaries wait for his head on a silver plate, according to the lyrics of this 2008 hit.
Lukas Graham's 2015 song 7 Years is a song about growing up, what he has learned along the way, and his hopes for his future self.
The Devil Went to Georgia from the Charlie Daniel Band, from 1979. Is Johnny the best fiddle player that's ever been? Listen to the song and find out.
My final song is from Rush. Red Sector A is a story told from the viewpoint of a young girl imprisoned in a concentration camp. This song was co-written by Rush bass guitarist Geddy Lee and was released in 1984. Geddy Lee's parents were both concentration camp survivors.
And that 's a wrap!
Join me again next week for another episode of Music Moves Me.
A great selection of music to enjoy
ReplyDelete...Robbie RIP.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for a music theme this week, Alana! It was nice to read a bit of the back story of each of your selections, which I was totally clueless about. Charlie Daniel's was so popular back in the day and is a good arrangement. I like that how oh Johnny beats out the devil! :) Have a boogietastic week, my friend! xo
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how we can listen to a song on repeat for years but never hear the words or think about its meaning. A Civil War song? Hmm. Louis XVI? Wow! "7 Years" is pretty clear but the old age of 60 is kinda insulting! I heard Charlie Daniels sing "The Devil Went to Georgia" when I was young. It was a memorable concert, especially this song. Lightfoot-maybe but Rush-definitely fall into the first category. I was clueless.
ReplyDeleteWill always love Gordan Lightfoot. Thanks for your post and have a great week.
ReplyDeleteThanks for including Gordon Lightfoot's iconic song, a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteSo sad to hear about Robbie Robinson. "The Weight" is probably one of my all time favorite songs. I'll have to see "The Last Waltz" if I can find it.
ReplyDeleteThe best songs tell a story, and these are some great examples!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite songs are the ones that tell me a story! Well done!!!
ReplyDeleteRIP to Robbie and a great songs.
ReplyDeleteGreat selection. I love the Devil Went Down to Georgia, and I really like Viva la Vida
ReplyDeleteI think this may be the 45th anniversary of the day I first heard "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Wow. Charlie Daniels has held up well.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I haven't heard The Devil Went to Georgia from the Charlie Daniel Band since hubby was in his band... they had this one guy that new every word & every note. He was so good! Anyway, it's a very cool song I haven't heard in a long time. Thanks... Have a great day my friend! HUGS
ReplyDeleteNever heard of Lukas Graham- but i love the other songs.!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this theme but I couldn't play Rush but, that's OK because....I can't stand them. It's the lead singer...like fingers on a chalkboard. Sad because they are Canadian and the one band member who died was born on the city I live in.
ReplyDeleteThese story teller bands are the best, Alana. We like them all! We're big fan of Coldplay since the beginning, so that one is favourite this week😺 Great theme btw! Double Pawkisses for a Happy Weekend🐾😽💞
