Winter Wonders - Nature in Grey and White

2014 is starting with another burst of wintry weather here in upstate New York, where I live.  We are getting snow this morning, which will be followed by a burst of very cold weather.

This is a sample of what wintry weather looks like here. I took these pictures the day after Christmas, as my spouse and I traveled through the Catskill Mountains.
I love how snow looks in the cracks of rock formations along the highway.
A flash of blue sky!  Quick, the camera!
A view of the Catskills.
Snowing....snowing...and still more snow to come.  We are supposed to have a major snowstorm starting later today, and continuing into tomorrow.  Tomorrow will also be our first below zero morning of the year.  I can hardly (sarcasm) wait.

It's not common to have a sunny day here during the winter. Some days, the sky looks like grey mist.  Other days, the sky is almost white.

If the sky is blue, chances are it is bitterly cold.  When that happens, you just want to be outside, until you go outside. Brrr.

Only three more months to spring.  I am counting the days.

What is your favorite season of the year?

  1. And, now for the good news. Tonight, the greys will be completely converted to whites... (with a chance of grey in the heavens...)

    1. There's a lot of white out there. Too much, in all kinds of piles. The good news is - that we got the sun when it was all over.

  3. I have lived in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Massachusetts….where snow falls by the foot not the inch, lol! now I live south in TN where even the forecast of snow 1/2'-1" causes widespread panic and school cancellations. :) and i laugh thinking how 'up north' the school buses would ride ahead of the snow plows! Sorry for the storm you are getting tonight, be safe & warm

    1. Thank you. Many years ago I lived in Wichita Falls, TX - they had much the same attitudes about snow there as they do in Tennessee. They would cancel school if snow was in the forecast, just as you describe! But sometimes I wish I lived in a place where snow wasn't that common.
