Summer Ramblings - Pink Skies at Dusk

We've had some stormy weather this past week in upstate New York.  In the last week, according to the National Weather Service, we've had eight confirmed tornadoes.  One, tragically, resulted in four deaths.

But there is something else a storm can result in, if you aren't in the midst.  Great photo opportunities.
Taken by my son near Maine, New York, July 14.
Westover, near Johnson City, NY 7-13-14
The day before, a storm hit us with heavy rains but the heavy winds predicted missed us.  And after the storm is over , we got a pink sunset.  This sky reminds me of the sky in an old Venus Paradise coloring set. (Remember them?)
As the sunset progressed, the sky got pinker.

Colors in my flower garden just glowed.
Hostas tinted pink.
These flowers are almost white.  Even the ground (brown mulch) was glowing in the pink sunset.

Yes, the weather can have beauty, even as it can turn deadly in an instant.

Do you have a weather story to tell?

  1. Lovely photos. I live on Long Island, NY. We had the storms last night and they were nasty. I love that you chose to highlight the beauty that I usually overlook.

    1. I have family on Long Island. I hope they were spared. It's hard to think of beauty when you are in the middle of a weather situation. I know that firsthand.

  2. The flowers really do seem to glow in the evening light! The severe weather has skirted our area, but there have been some very interesting skies.

    1. I hope you continue to be spared the bad weather. We have been, the last several days. Cooler than normal - but now it's supposed to warm up.

  3. Lovely photos! Weather story? Well, let's see, there was Hurricane David back in 1979, I believe, which kept me from starting my 2nd year of high school for four exciting days. And I also remember having to go to work nearly 2 decades later in spite of blizzard weather so bad, I slid most of the way, terrified I wouldn't make it. I was a therapist at the time and it seemed utterly pointless to go in to work when I knew none of our clients would show up. I was right, and we got to go home later that day. Which reminds me of another work "snow day" years before that one, where I was delighted to stay in my pjs all day. And I bet there are even more weather memories hiding inside where I can't quite get to them. :)

    1. I remember Hurricane Agnes in 1972 - I lived in New York City then - and a storm on September 8, 1957 (?) that impacted where I lived in the Bronx. And I've been through several blizzards. We remember the forces of nature when weather decides to turn nasty!

  7. I remember the 1963 great bushfire in South Australia. My family lived up on the mountaintop above Adelaide and the fire was sweeping toward us. Firefighters back-lit the section in front of the TV transmitter beside us. The air was dark red. Danger colored our vision.

    1. I read a harrowing account of a bushfire in a YA novel, "Now" by Morris Gleitzman. What a scary experience this must have been. "Danger colored our vision" - I like that. (I would have been stupid enough to try to take pictures, I have a feeling.)
