It's the Groundhog's Fault

The Super Bowl, in warm Arizona, is over.
We are left with snow, and six more weeks of winter.  Alas.

Today is Groundhog Day in the United States, where we pull a groundhog out of the ground to predict the weather.   It's purely scientific, of course, and this is how it works.  If the groundhog sees its shadow, we have six more weeks of winter.  If the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, we get an early spring.

Today, the ground hog saw its shadow, despite the fact that it was overcast, and a rain/snow mix was moving in.  Somehow, that ground hog almost always sees its shadow.  In 2013, it didn't see its shadow and we still got six more weeks of winter.

The groundhog almost got the death penalty for that one.

So, for Groundhog Day in the Binghamton, New York, area, what is our weather like?

I woke up to these front steps, after we had a storm overnight.  You can sort of see the covered steps in the bottom of the photo.
Come on, tree.  Don't you know that a frown is just a smile upside down (according to cliche)?

Goodbye, football season.  Let's take one more look back at yesterday.
The party started here, and the party ended in our living rooms, leaving us to the mercy of the cold, blowing snow.

Subtracting the snow already on the ground, we received about nine inches (22.86 cm) of snow.  This isn't Boston, true, and we didn't get ice like they got downstate.  But tonight, it will drop to near zero F (-17 C).  Considering that, a couple of days ago, they were predicting a low of -12 (-24 C), I can't complain.

I will feature some more pictures on my Wednesday Winter Wonders feature.

What is the weather like where you live?

  1. That seems an impressive amount of snow to me, here in the subtropical South. I love the pictures, but I have to admit I'm happy I don't have to deal with it in my garden or on my roads.

    1. February, I think, is our worst month of weather. But nature will reward us for our patience by granting us spring - eventually.

    1. I got it. Blogger can be glitchy; it isn't always friendly to commenters. I do have moderation on, because of the volume of spam I receive.

  3. That crazy groundhog. I think he just likes winter. That or there's just always six weeks of winter left after Groundhog Day and someone just got the bright idea to bring some attention to an unassuming animal by giving them a job. :-)

  4. It's extremely hot with the temperature at 32-34 degrees Celsius. Sometimes it can get cloudy with occasional rain.

  5. We had snow overnight here in England. The first time close to us near London. But I doubt it would even be one inch. Your snowfall is impressive.
