Soaring and Sinking

My heart soars.

Our yard in upstate New York is in a tiny cold pocket, so our bulbs bloom a little late.

But yesterday, the crocuses opened.  By the time I got home from work, they had closed up, but I was able to take this beautiful picture.   They aren't green, but the Luck of the Irish was with us.

The famous Almanac was so, so wrong about our winter, possibly the most amazing in my approximately 30 years living here.

In contrast, last year, the crocuses didn't bloom until April 23.  That's one of the beauties of blogging daily - it become a little diary of sorts.

I look back at March 18, 2015 and am so glad today isn't that day.

But now, Dear Diary/Blog, my heart is sinking. Because we may be having a major snowstorm by the first day of spring (March 20).  Say it ain't so.

A part of my heart was suspecting it all along.  Nature was not going to rest without reminding us, one last time, of her power, and fickleness.

Especially her power.

It had to turn back into winter one last time.

  1. I have a man who helps me with the heavy stuff in my garden and when we were talking yesterday I mentioned that some of our worst storms hit in April. Hope you don't get dumped on too badly.

  4. Having grown up in Connecticut I remember the pure delight we all felt when the crocuses pushed their way up from the ground. Hopefully the imminent storm will be short lived and spring will find her way.

    1. Spring is temporarily lost but she will be back. The storm, thankfully, missed us.

  5. We are having an early spring in Texas too. I love the signs of new beginnings and fresh starts! Hoping your next round of weather is nicer that it appears.

    1. We missed the storm - just cold and dreary. No big deal for March.

  9. Looks lovely. I wish I could share pics here to show you a contrast of my garden at home in Kerala (South India) right now... its laden with okra, aubergines, bananas, chickoos, mangoes, red spinach, coconuts, pepper et al.

  10. Well, it wasn't so, much to the disappointment of my children, who were very much hoping for a snow day today! Last year, we used 13; this year, only 2! Such an odd winter it was!
