Dawn of the Dead Cherry Blossoms

The strangest spring I can remember in upstate New York continues.

It was only a week ago yesterday that an early spring was upon us.  But now it seems like an eternity ago, that walk we took on the west side of Binghamton.
The cherry blossoms were opening on that gorgeous Saturday.
The magnolias were starting to bloom.

The birds were singing, and all was well in our world.

Alas, we knew what was in our forecast, here in the Binghamton, New York area.  We thought it was a late April's Fool joke.
A guest photographer took this, near LaFayette, New York, April 4
It wasn't a joke, especially when the temperature dropped to around 16 degrees F (-9C)

When the snow melted on the 6th, this is what we found.

The cherry blossoms had died.
The daffodils were now droopodils.

Some children must have had fun with this April snowman.  The rest of us said "bah humbug".

Then, on Thursday, it started to snow flurry again.  As for the rest of it, I don't even want to blog about it.  Another hard freeze last night.  The effects on the apple crop remain to be seen.

I knew this was going to happen.

I wish it had been wrong.

Climate change has struck again.

Tomorrow, back to the Blogging from A to Z Challenge.

  1. Ah, droopodils. I wondered what those were outside the kitchen window, lol. This kind of weather is why I stopped growing forsythia. They'd start to open ad get hit by a bad frost. So much for global warming.

  2. I hope the trees will bloom again. I am not sure if the blossoms will return though. I pray for warmth for your area soon too.

  3. Global climate change virtually guarantees that our seasons will continue to be unpredictable. I guess we better get used to it.

  5. The changing climate conditions are playing havoc on plants and crops in India too.

  6. Awwww Alana, how very sad!! I noticed on the weather reports that you guys were getting hammered with winter again, and I'm so sorry to hear it! There goes the fruit, eh? We've had a very early and warmish spring, with several frosts and even a hard freeze since, but so far our fruit trees look good. *fingers crossed*

  7. yes we have droopodils at my apartment.

Haven't managed to go check on the ones in my garden in Canarsie, those tend to lag the ones in front of my apartment. I may just miss those this year.
